Do you ever know who you really are and what you stand for?

It is not about our roles and part or our social distinctiveness. We can be a friend, family member, employee, colleague or associate all at the meanwhile, but these are just an aspect of us. It doesn’t exemplify who we deeply are on the inside. Our inner self is who we/YOU really are on the inside.

Now, to know our inner self is to know our drive, our morals, our dream, our goals, our motivations, and our beliefs. Not by what other have been told to us, but what we have learned for ourselves. In knowing our inner self, this involves a great level of self-examination or self-awareness. If we have this kind of transparency of at least partial of what is listed above, perhaps we may have somewhat a great level of self-awareness and at the same time, the development of self-discovery never stops because it’s a life-long journey.

”YOU” Are More than You Know Who You Are

Sometimes, we are trying to uncover our inner self. For some of us hold various identities in life with our own sets of generally distinct principles and expectations. These may not entirely adapt to who we are on the inside.

For an instance, I am an employee of a finance company. As an employee, our mission should be related with whatever our company’s mission to improve the value of people’s lives. Our goals should also be in line with the company to increase the company’s sales by 20% in one year and grow its numbers of branches.

However, as a person we have other dreams and goals which differ from our company’s goals. Perhaps I really love blogging and wanted to be known in the field of blogging. Well, it’s very different from what we’re expected as a financing employee. This applies to our other identities too. In every identity, we are expected to have a set of drive/morals/dream/goals/motivations and beliefs which may not be exactly the same as our inner identities.

Every one of us is unique; our inner self cannot be boxed by any particular identity or label. I am a daughter to my parents, a sister to my sisters (because we are all girls), a friend to my friends, a blogger to my readers, and a celebrity to my fans, but I know I am more than just that. As what @surpassinggoogle said, “I am more than any things”. These are just characters and labels. None of the character by itself exactly determined “Who I Am”. The inner me is someone who can’t be defined or labeled by any one name.

SUNFLOWER.jpg

The easy comparison to use would be the sunflower. Our inner self is like the disk of the sunflower- the core part where petals are attached. Our identities are like the petals around our inner self which is the core. As the petals are extensions of the head, they are not the head. In other words, our identities are extensions of ourselves, but they do not signify who we are as a whole.

Discovering Our Inner Self

If we have never been given enough thought to “Who” we are on the inside, it is likely that we have become defined by our identities. It is usual for people to see their selves as a certain person, such as a friend, partner, employee, or an individual. Others spend their lives building themselves around such identities.

We are the owner of our identities. If we are not aligned with who we really are, we are probably just living our life for others. Chasing others’ goals and living up to others’ expectations, rather than what you really want. To know our inner self is the first step of living self-awareness s life of our creation.

Knowing Your Inner Self Comes From Self-Awareness

In order to know our inner self, we need this so called self-awareness. Even if we do not have full clarity of our inner self, it is likely that certain aspects of our inner self are now displayed on a day-to-day basis through how we act. If we find ourselves often extolling the importance of loving godliness, responsibility is likely one of our principles. If we feel a compelling need to always be there for our friends, consistency is probably an important worth to us.

This was a good read while on my way home.
I'm now encouraged to post more.

I agree, I remember in college my professor asked us to define ourselves or our roles. With all those roles about a daughter, sister, girlfriend, friend. you define what your role as yourself. It will take time with all these busy schedule to know yourself. But it's certainly a must to know thyself because that's the key to real happiness and contentment. :)

This is worth read for an inspiration:
