The last bastion falls...steemCreated with Sketch.

Maybe most won't be able to relate and that's ok, I realize that my ways are not for everyone and truthfully they may not even be practical. However, I can't help but to think that I delayed this for too long anyways.

Even though I've been using Linux for the longest of times, I've always kept one laptop, one system running Windows just in case. In case I wanna play something, in case I want to try some fancy software, something that might prove too difficult in Torvalsland, but after the bloatware on the last bastion, my Asus laptop, began to crash and make it painfully slow, I've decided it's time to press the fork it button.

Since I'm messing with python these days and I'm jumping head first into JavaScript too, I probably won't have time to play with anything that requires windows. In other words, I don't think I will miss my turtle speed laptop at all.

As a matter of fact, it's probably going to feel brand new again, since mint is such a light distro.

New year's Eve and I'm geeking out... Hahaha ... I have to laugh at myself.

I am using 'Linux Mint Cinnamon' (Windows is not allowed to infiltrate any of my computers since years). :)

Haven't used Mint in a long time. It did have a few nice features over other distros but with Elementary OS, Deepin, and PoP!_OS I'm hard pressed to go far from those three.

My friend got a free comp that didnt work. Too laggy. I threw mint on there and it blew his mind.

He needed to save some files from the previous os and was amazed that linux could access everything and save it at the beginning of the installation. Linux can turn a completely worthless device into something usable.

I can only use Windows on an SSD. It takes too long booting up on a normal HD. I'm going to try Manjaro, I like trying different versions of Linux. I did ditch Windows for a few years but I still use programs that are a pain with Linux. Maybe I'll try and ditch it again in 2019.

its gotten so much better over the years... i started messing with linux in 97, now that was difficult but fun!

Embarrassed to say that I have never even seen Linux running, at least not knowingly... I think I have some old laptop laying around so maybe I could give it a try as well!

Not knowing how computer savvy you are I'd suggest elementary OS or Pop!_OS as a good starting point. Even if the laptop is older as long as you have at least 2GB of RAM you shouldn't have any issues. Deepin is good too if you have at least 4GB

i was about to ask you about requirements... i have an old macbook pro with 4gb ram and a duo processor running mint right now, its working, but its fighting...

Can't speak for macbooks, but KDE has in the past been very particular with video cards. Given that you're getting back into programming you could always give Elementary or Deepin a go. They both have a app store and have no issues with developers making money form their apps.

Thanks for the information! I will review and give it a try!

Nice choice got to love linux, and after some time it feels good to say I don't play I Linux! haha

Lollercaust!! Yeah, same problems here. I went by and saw @jllmechngr to clean install of Windows 10, because the Toshiba craptop that I bought was designed for Win7, came packaged with Win8, and ofcourse I updated to Win10 just cause 8 was such crap. Worst of all, it came with Toshiba bloat-ware on top of Windows, and was basically just a way of getting you to fork out $$$ for a portable advertisement sign that maybe did other things too?

I was on the verge of putting Kubuntu on it, but then he said that he would trade me my craptop for an old one that he no long used anymore (which was a SOLID upgrade, overall) because the Toshiba was just shitty enough for him to put Window98 on and interface with his car computers... Keep in mind, this hunk'a'junk was >3 years old.

So anyways, that's an a-okay trade in my book, and I can still have a windows laptop around for the reasons you mentioned above.. at least until I figure out how Wine works. ;P

Good thing for us almost anything good is web based these days!
