I've been cleaning up my feed in the past few weeks. Not because of anything crazy, but it's simply that I've come to realize that when I first started on this platform I was just following everybody without giving it too much thought. Granted, some of the first accounts I followed on Steemit, like @tarazkp have remained as part of my regular content consumption, but most, have either stopped posting, or became something else entirely.
At some point in time I remember following close to a thousand people. This number to me at this moment sounds crazy high, simply because there is possibly no way I could ever read that many posts. Yes, I read a lot, I post a lot, but read ten times more. How else would I have things to talk about? think about it.
I felt compelled to write this explanation post just because I'm sure someone might be getting a gina notification wondering what just happened. I assure you that there is no ill intent behind the action, I'm simply attempting to be a little more honest with myself.
- If someone is just resteeming, then Why am I following?
- If someone just became a report bot, then Why do I need to see it daily?
- If someone hasn't posted in 3 months, then Why would I follow still?
Now, I'm not saying I've not made any mistakes. There is a good chance that I unfollowed someone that I will end up following again, since its 1am at the moment and I'm being aided by some red wine. However, this little post, and all the caveats and couches, or better said the couched caveats I'm conveying are basically here to say - "If I unfollowed you, say hi.. maybe I messed up"
I'm starting to think that since I'm here to create an effective network and to learn, my efforts should be focused with those who share that particular little mission. In other words, even if someone is the nicest person in the world, but has decided to commit to selfies without a hint of interaction or effort, then I'm probably not too interested anymore.
As I'm writing this weird apologetic ramble, I'm remembering the myspace days. At some point in time I had thousands of accounts following the band, over 10k if I'm not mistaking. Needless to say, not one of them ever interacted with us. So, I'm trying not to make that mistake, making the numbers look good.
I'll pour myself another cup and surrender to morpheus and mr. pillow... but as I said, if you believed I failed a little bit with an unfollow, call me out.
Much love

Totally agree here. Sometimes my feed is full of resteems by different people. Or flooded with things that I have no interest in. I feel bad culling but I should! I suck at “unfriending” but maybe I shouldn’t think of it like that. It’s not Facebook after all.

Usually i unfollow inactive acounts, or accounts that are not related to my niche...
And i think thats good, that gives more chance to get exposure to those who are posting related content to me...

I only follow around 200 people, i see no point at following too many people! And i should go and make some following cleaning because there are some that i haven't seen in months and they will probably never come back....
With just 200 people that i'm following it's already a full time job, if i had more to follow i woudn't know what to do!

Man I dunno if you ever followed me. But heck I’m on a mission now to win you back lol
Seriously though, I completely understand the auditing of followers. I try to engage with everyone I follow but it starts to become a real j.o.b. to keep up lol

I don't think we have to justify who we follow. It's largely about what time you have to read stuff. I did unfollow a load of inactive accounts a while back. I know most of my followers are inactive, but it's just a number

I followed also about 800 people in the first month. Then I realized that I really don't like the content all of them created thus I started cleaning the list. It happens nowadays also that I follow someone and then after a few weeks to realize that I don't like his/her posts anymore and unfollow so I don't see that as a problem. A real problem would be to keep your feed cluttered with tens of posts from people you no longer read and interact with.

Hi meno. Should do it out of habit at least once a month. You are correct in saying that people change and there is nothing worse than having 100's of resteems going through your feed. It is about finding the right balance.

i think the excessive resteems get me... one account resteeming 40 posts in a day... it happens.
With you 100 there bud

I really need to go through my follower list again. As many of them have becomes inactive. I have a few I follow that I read all the time but sometimes it is hard to keep up and I have to let VP build before I can vote on many posts. It is sometimes a fine line you have to follow on following people. LOL.

I am of the idea that as much as upvotes are welcome and all... this, the conversations, the jokes, the gifs or what have you, carry a lot of value too. I've never think to myself...
Oh, i wanna go say hi, but my upvote is trashed... it's always trashed.. hence why I delegate most of my VP to helpie and support as many people as i can that way.
But I know where you are coming from.

I understand that and my upvote is always trashed to as I do not have a lot of SP. But I like to show support to the people that make good posts and are trying, like me, to teach something through their posts.
It seems that there are not many conversations on posts much anymore unless it is someone trying to get noticed by a whale and trying to get that upvote. It is either a "Thanks" or "Nice Post". Like many people have said before and will continue to say it "Networking" is the key to Steemit and I am trying to do much more of that going forward.

Dunbar's number is a suggested cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships—relationships in which an individual knows who each person is and how each person relates to every other person
