Balcony Forest Update 22 July

The biggest marigold I have ever grown is just starting to open. 😊 Hooray! My first flower!

I'm considering staking the plant like I would a tomato because it tipped over the other day!

Meanwhile, my tomatoes are still wee. Last year I had all bushy tomato plant and almost no tomatoes, this year I have molasses tomato plants. 😂 I still predict harvest in February, indoors, when there's snow on the ground.

All four of the trees got cinged like this after a week and a half in the courtyard instead of the balcony (I moved everybody when maintenance came and sprayed the wasp nest, because I didn't want them poisoned). They seem to all be recovering though, as they all have newer leaves coming in that are un-cinged. Goes to show how harsh the sun at altitude can be! On the balcony we have a lot of shade from a Tree of Heaven.

Ash tree blending in with the tree of heaven. Something also tried to EAT the ash tree in the courtyard, and something laid eggs on a leaf! I plucked that leaf... nobody eats my tree friends!

That's about it for now! I need to plant some more cat grass for Yuan. It's so nice out here this morning ...even I am getting tired of this heat wave! Have a good rest of your weekend, y'all!

Nice marigold flower! Gotta watch those critters that would eat your trees! Usually some moth or butterfly caterpillars...So now the nasty wasps are gone?

My grandmother used to have tons of marigolds on either side of her door. I haven't seen that flower in yeeeeeears!

Thank you! And marigolds ward off lots of pests, so by the door is a great place to put them. Before they built a wall there, I used to put pots of them on the ledge by my front door, after the year we were under biblical assault of grasshoppers (who liked my front door). After that, no more grasshoppers!

I've had my handful of tomatoes from last year in the freezer this whole time, because I froze them right away thinking I would make sauce when I had harvested enough. Hahahahaha! I even added some from a neighbor's garden that they gave me, and another handful from the store, and it still want really enough for sauce. Maybe this year I'll finally get tomato sauce!! 😂 In past years I ate my scant harvest as it came off the vine, but last year the plants were so big, I thought I would have tomatoes for miles.

I congratulate you on your first flower that is blooming and good your very small tomatoes will grow, it is amazing that you have those crops in your apartment and you can see that it is well cared for by your cat that serves as a guard.
