Living in Luxury Off The Grid… In the middle of nowhere? Without Road Access?

And then you decide to build a house?

You aren’t alone! It’s been done at Snowslide Gulch too! Just because you decide to build a traditional home doesn’t mean that you have to do it the traditional way. The people who sold us our home left us a few photos of the early stages of when they built the house. They decided that they would build the house gradually however the first thing they wanted to finish was the bedroom… on the top floor.

And they would finish it in the middle of winter…

The siding was sawn on site and the shakes for the roof, like the siding, were split from trees on the property. I feel a little guilty that we’ve replaced the beautiful traditional shakes with roofing made from recycled automobile tires (it still looks like shakes). It is now a lot more fire resistant and it hasn’t grown any moss (unlike the shakes that were a little fuzzy in places) but all the work that the former owners put into splitting those shakes! Now they’re being used for kindling and we have enough to last for years and years and more years!

Waste not, want not! They make excellent kindling!
