We are all subject to sin, to error; because of Adam's sin, the Bible explains that sin entered the world. But beyond this, the Bible tells us that we are free to choose between good and evil: "God made man from the beginning, and left him in the hand of his own counsel" Ben Sira 15:14. The Bible constantly presents us with the problem of evil, because good and evil are lifestyles, we lead a life full of sins or a life of righteousness (the golden rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", Matthew 7:12).
Sin is the omission of righteousness: "If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them", James 4:17.
The apostle Paul describes the universality of sin in man: "For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. As it is written:
´There is no righteous, not even one;
there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.´
´Their throats are open graves;
their tongues practice deceit.´
´The poison of vipers is on their lips.´
´Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.´
´Their feet are swift to shed blood;
ruin and misery mark their ways,
and the way of peace they do not know.´
´There is no fear of God before their eyes.´" Romans 3:9-18.
It is because of this universality of sin that man received the law of Moses: "Through the law we become conscious of our sin" Romans 3:20.
The apostle also adds in the letter to the Romans: "Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, ´You shall not covet.´" Romans 7:7.
The law of Moses helps us to avoid a life with our backs turned to God; but it does not give us the justification we need to avoid the path of error and follow Jesus. That is why Paul presents us with the grace of faith as a response to sin: "Righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ" Romans 3:22.
