The US Constitution is dead. It is merely a zombie constitution now. We follow its forms - biennial elections, 2, 4, and 6 year terms, etc. - but as a structure designed to constrain government power, and to enable each branch to effectively check and balance each other branch, it has at last failed, and there is little prospect for bringing it back to life via the electoral process. The public has become too sorted, the US is too great a world power, we have come to demand too much from the federal government, and the presidential primary system advantages demagogues so that normally our choice will simply be between the blue authoritarian personality and the red authoritarian personality.

But we will stumble along, refusing to recognize that truth, pretending our problems are just the making of the other party and their execrable followers, and deceiving ourselves that someday our side will establish firm control, unconstrained by the stupid and wicked partisans of the other team, and all will be well again.

It won't. The US Constitution cannot be revived. Its heart and mind are destroyed, and it merely stumbles along blindly. It's had a good run, much longer than the Framers likely would have believed possible. But it's time to kill it with intention, rather than through neglect, and replace it.
