Introduction
Steemhunt is one of the leading projects on the Steem blockchain. They reward users for hunting cool new products. Trough all 2018 they kept innovating introducing concepts and leading the way for the other Steem projects. The latest move from them also proves this. They are trying to get the Steemhunt token out on the market even before SMTs are out. They are about to get Steemhunt token on an exchange as an ERC20 token and later, when the SMTs are released, converted them to SMTs. Excellent job from them.
@steemhunt was launched in 2018. It has been around for an almost a year. They started with activities in February 2018, but really took of in May 2018. As we are all aware 2018 wasn’t the best year for the crypto industry. Bear market all year long with a massive hit at the end of the year. Launching and sustain a product in this period was a real challenge.
Scope of Analysis
In this analysis, daily data will be presented for the Steemhunt activities. Steemhunt has a unique way of operating with hunts being posted and then approved by the moderators. They are rewarding the top hunts for the day with a vote from them. Furthermore, they are rewarding comments on the hunts. It is not just about finding a cool new product, but engaging discussion as well. Because of this a more detailed look will be made on the comments side and on the Steemhunt moderators. A ranking on the Steemhunt users for 2018 will be made as well.
The analysis was carried out for the period from 01.01.2018 to 31.12.2018. Data from the Steem blockchain was used and details of the queries can be found at the bottom of this post.
1. Activity on Steemhunt
Activity on the platform is in posts and comments. Steemhunt have their own web interface and web extension as well. All of the posts and comments made on the Steemhunt web are ending on the Steem blockchain. They have integrated a scoring system for the products that appears on their interface, so they can make daily ranks of the products.
Posts and comments can be made on their web, but also from the other steem interfaces like Steemit, Partiko, Busy etc. Because of this I have aproched the data activities in two different ways. The first is showing all the post and comments with the steemhunt tag, and the second one is for the posts and comment made only with the steemhunt.app.
Here is the data for 2018. Data for each day was collected and presented on this graph.
As already mentioned here is the data collected with the two different methods. As expected, the overall data containing the steemhunt tag have more activities that the posts and comments made only trough the Steemhunt interface.
The total number of posts and comments on Steemhunt in 2018 is 369.343, out of which 306.430 posted from the Steemhunt web
This is a difference in around 20%. Since this is an analysis about the @steemhunt, in the next charts only the data from the Steemhunt web will be presented and analysed.
What does the overall activities number on Steemhunt tells? The project started humble with low number of posts in March and April and then increased massively at the end of May and in June. The reason for this is the big delegation that @steemhunt received from misterdelagation at the time.
There was a drop in July 2018, and then back again with numbers stabilizing around 2000 per day. Then comes the Hardfork, and a sharp drop in activities because of it. After the HF20 the activities follows the price of Steem. As the prices are going down so does the activities on the platform. At the end of the year Steemhunt has around 800 posts and comment per day on average.
Posts and Comments Breakdown
As already mentioned, Steemhunt is stimulating commenting on the platform. Let’s see the structure of posts and comments on Steemhunt in 2018.
Below is a breakdown of posts and comments and their movement in 2018.
The upper line represents the comments. Immediately we can see that there are a lot more comments then posts on the platform. Steemhunt wants user’s engagement and comments. They want to hear what people think about the products posted there. And they have pretty much succeeded in their mission.
A total of 50.459 posts on the platform, and 255.971 comments. A 1 to 5 ratio post to comments.
The overall activities follow the first chart.
Although what can be noticed here is that there is a much bigger drop in comments than posts. In November 2018 there is a massive drop in comments. Changing the voting strategy on comments may be one of the reasons because this happened. Steemhunt introduced a scoring system for the comments, similar to one for the posts. In order a comment to be voted from steemhunt, it need to receive votes from the community first. The year end with around 150 daily posts and 600 comments.
Comments Breakdown
A lot of comments are produced on the Steemhunt platform. Users get rewarded for a decent comment on the platform. Let’s get a closer look to the comments.
Comments are made from Steemhunt users, moderators and the Steemhunt account as well. The moderators approve each hunt with a comment. Steemhunt is telling people when they vote their hunt.
Here is a breakdown of comments from users, moderators and Steemhunt.
The upper line represents comments from users, the middle one moderators comments, and the lower one Steemhunt comments.
A total of 183.921 user comments, 47.512 moderators comments and a 24.538 steemhunt comments.
That is a lot of comments 😊. The users share is around 72%. Not bad at all. The moderators have done an excellent job as well with 47k of comments. Bravo to them.
2. Moderators Activities on Steemhunt in 2018
Since moderators are playing such an important role on the Steemhunt platform, approving each hunt, lets take a look at their activities on the platform. More closely on the number of comments they posted, because in this manner they approve the hunts.
The Steemhunt moderators team is: @teamhumble, @fknmayhem, @dayleeo, @urbangladiator, @bitrocker2020, @joannewong, @monajam, @pialejoana, @geekgirl, @playitforward and @jayplayco.
The absolute champion is @teamhumble! He have made an almost 9000 comments. Next to him is @fknmayhem with 7000 comments, and third is @dayleeo with 5800 comments. @monajam is interesting. She seems to started a bit late, but did an amazing job and ended the year with around 4600 comments, which put her in the middle of the ranking.
Here is a chart with the overall comments from the Steemhunt moderators.
Congrats on the job done from the moderators.
3. Steemhunt Votes in 2018
Steemhunt reward its users with votes for the product they hunt and put them on the platform. Also, they reward users for the comments they made. I’m not entirely sure about the criteria for the product hunts, but they vote quite a lot. The highest the hunt score the better the vote. Before November they voted at least two comments per user daily and after they introduced hunt score for the comments as well.
Here how the voting looks in 2018.
The total number of posts and comments voted from Steemhunt in 2018 was 166.457
This is impressive. Steemhunt has gave a great support to community with a huge number of votes. I think this is the biggest number of votes that a steem dapp have rewarded.
From the chart we can see that the number of votes increased a lot at the end of May, after what it stabilized it self around 600 daily votes, growing steadily until November. After November we can see a sharp drop in the number of daily votes. This correlate with the number of comments made. It is because of the new voting system for comments that was introduced. After this the number of daily votes from Steemhunt remained the same until the end of the year. Just below 500.
Number of Monthly Users Voted
Below is a chart with the number of monthly users that received vote from Steemhunt.
A Total of 2120 users received a vote from Steemhunt in 2018.
This is a great number of users supported by Steemhunt. Here we can see a sharp increase in the number of users suported by Steemhunt in June 2018. After that it stiblizes it self around 600 monthly users suported by Steemhunt, and the last two months of the year there is a drop and in December 2018 this number is around 300. This drop is again becouse of the change in policy of the comments voting.
4. Number of Unique Users in 2018
Below is a chart with the number of unique users that posted on Steemhunt in 2018.
The chart represent the number of unique users, not a daily or monthly active ones. We can see that new users continued to arive to the platform in all of the 2018. The biggest growth is in June , and then it is steadily growing till the end of the year. In the last quarter of the year a total of 600 new users posted from the Steemhunt platorfm. This is a great achivment for the period, having in mind that the price of crypto droped masivley.
In 2018 a total of 4449 users posted on the Steemhunt platform.

Congratulation to the top Steemhunt Users in 2018! You have done a great job on the platform and been quite active.
On the first place is @calprut, second is @chronocrypto, and on the third place @vinzie1. If some Steemhunt Users who is not in the top 20 wants to know the ranking for his account feel free to ask in the comment.
Note on the top users and moderators: The moderators are excluded from this ranking. Also as pointed out from @fknmayhem, @chronocrypto and @folken were moderators at certain point in time.
Conclusion
No doubt Steemhunt is an amazing project. From the analysis we can see that there are some changes that happened in the year. This is the right way to go. You launch a product, tested out and adjust on the way. They are continuously working on the project, improving it and pushing it in the right direction. They had a great start with a massive growth in users and posting in May 2018. At the end of the year we see a drop in activities but mainly in the comment section. The number of posts/hunts remains stable. The moderators are also doing a great job with a ton of comments. In terms of users, post and voting, Steemhunt is on the top of the list from all the Steem dapps.
A total of 4449 users posted from the Steemhunt platform in 2018, with around almost 300.000 posts and comments. This number don’t include the posts and comments from other steem interfaces.

HI @dalz, great analysis! You've really covered a lot of different and important aspects specific to steemhunt! Glad to see the difference between the tag-based and the app-based query shown here! The 1:5 ratio from posts to comment is pretty good, not a lot of Steem apps/dapps can reach that. I was not aware of the change in rewarding user comments starting in November - the numbers can't deny that, neither the daily comments, nor the number of voted comments. Thanks for the additional details on that! The moderation activities are impressive! The top mod with close to 9k comments in not even a year - wow! Just a minor remark on the graphs: using different line colors for multi-line graphs could make a bit easier to grasp.

Thanks @crokkon :)
I tried to cover the specific aspects of Steemhunt. Also get a more specific look at it, with activity made only trough their web. Took your advice on that one.
On the design side I try to keep it in minimalist style, but the chart on mods had a lot of lines and a lot of shades of gray :) So yea a more distinct colors would do a better job there .... You can say I went for form over function.

Surprise, surprise! With 4449 users, that is so many already and I never expected to be on the top 10. Thank you very much @dalz for getting these numbers! It makes me feel appreciated with the least that I can share to the community. I think the others would feel the same.
@steemhunt played a great role in growing my account on the Steem blockchain. Except for the US$s that I paid to know the existence of Steemit and more dollars to pay for the creation of my account, I started with zero by the time my account was created. Not knowing anyone and having no idea of how the system goes, I had challenges finding my space on Steem. With just seven months on the platform, I am still learning and there are still so much more to learn. But again, @steemhunt has been a great help for me to start with. Kudos and more power to @steemhunt.
Thanks again, @dalz!

I had several delisted hunts because of whatever reason that I may have missed from the posting guidelines. I learn as I went on, and I am still learning. One thing is for sure, things get easier as I go along. I am sure you can do the same. 😊
