Protect your passwords with Bitwarden - Full tutorial

in utopian-io •  7 years ago  (edited)

This article introduces the Bitwarden open-source password manager in its browser version and explains step by step how to use it.

Sorry screenshot are in French because i' ve don't found how to use the extension in french (my navigator is French)

Bitwarden is a complete password manager that will allow you to manage your passwords simply on your device and remotely, such as Dashlane,...

Here I'll tell you about the browser extension. For the curious, the Github is here: https://github.com/bitwarden/browser. Please note, however, that other versions are available here.

Indeed, Bitwarden is fully open-source, that's why I chose it. An open-source project is often more secure than a project that isn't, because everyone can report a bug,...

Presentation of Bitwarden

Bitwarden is a password manager such as Dashlane, KeePass,... available in multi-platform.
It allows you to store all your passwords in one place with a single master password.
Your passwords are available in the cloud, so you can access your passwords from any device with the internet. Don't worry, your data is secure:
Bitwarden uses AES 256 bit encryption as well as PBKDF2 to secure your data.

Bitwarden allows you to synchronize and use your passwords anywhere in the world thanks to the cloud

If you don't trust their servers, you can even host it on yours, since the project is open-source:It's here

Note: Steemit passwords do not fill automatically because it is not a page, but a window in the page that appears when logging in, but just follow the instructions in this article to manually fill in the password.

Install and Use Bitwarden

1. Download and registration

To install Bitwarden on your browser, go to this site and click on your browser to download the appropriate version.

Once the installation is complete, you must register. Go to the extension's menu by clicking on its logo in the top right-hand corner then click on "Create an account".

Here are the fields:

1st field : E-mail
2nd field : Password (I advise you to create a password of at least 15 characters combining upper/lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Be sure to remember it because it is the password that will allow you to access all the others so it must be secure. I recommend this French article to make a good password (you can use google translate to read it ^^)
3rd field : Password verification: Enter your password again
4th field : Password index, in case you lose it, it is sent to you by e-mail.

Add a password

1. You are on the site

If you go to the site of your choice, all you have to do is log in and click on "Save password" in the bar that will appear at the top. The password will then be saved for the next visit.

Manual addition

Image modified to save space

To add a password manually, go to the "My Chest" tab and click on the cross at the top right.
Next, enter your login information.

Here are the fields:

1st field : Format of identifiers (do not touch)
2nd field : Name given (just to list, not mandatory)
3rd field : URL of the site
4th field : Login username (sometimes this is the e-mail)
5th field : password
6th field : Password generator, I advise you to use it to create new passwords.

Then click on save and it's done!

Manual filling

Sometimes passwords do not fill up automatically, as on Steemit, because they are not directly in the page. This trick is also valid for copying the password.

To copy the password, go to the Bitwarden logo and then to the key icon, the password will be found in your clipboard.

Cette contribution apporte bel et bien du contenu, même étant une traduction, cela fait partager mes connaissances aux anglophones. Je ne vois pas pourquoi j' ai déjà vu d' autres auteur faire des traductions comme celle-ci et être acceptés.
