Making the life-giving female appear androgynous.

Women are allowed to dress however they want. It's a free country--or sorta free. However, given the influence over pop and movie stars to impel them to stand up for certain establishment causes, to project certain unwholesome personas--like the strap-on dayglo dildo worn by Christina Aguilera at a pride week concert in Los Angeles several years ago where kids were present--and dress up in music videos like an outtake from the satanic ritual party scene in "Eyes Wide Shut," seeing a movie star on the cover of a magazine that prides itself on literary profiles of the rich and famous is no surprise.

It's simply underscores how some women believe their worth is only as good as their exaggerated cleavage, smoky eyeshadow, and blood red lips--accentuated with the requisite black sequin jacket. (Or more likely, she plays along because she wants to remain relevant/employable in Hollywood.) She looks every bit the part of a female vampire; all that's missing are the fangs.

There of course have been other Vanity Fair covers with movie star cleavage, but this struck me as particularly perverse when I eyed it in the checkout line of my local health food store. It has an "Interview with the Vampire" vibe along with an added splash of "Rocky Horror Picture Show" thrown in. Of course the latter puts a whole new spin on it: Transylvania.
