I love dragon fruit and eat them all the time but until today I had no idea of their providence. Dragon fruit is the affectionate name but their real name is: Pitaya. They are the fruit of several kinds of cactus and indigenous to the Americas.
They are truly awesome fruits!
With increased global trade the dragon fruit was brought from the Americas to Asia. The French were said to have introduced dragon fruit to Vietnam over a hundred years ago. Vietnam is now the world's largest exporter of dragon fruit and it accounts for over half the countries fruit export turnover.
It is now widely cultivated and loved by Asians. There are two types. One as in the pictures I have shown of my breakfast has white flesh, the other is a wonderful deep purple/red and both are full of little black seeds.
Dragon fruit have a very subtle flavor. I have always found the red version to be tastier and in both types the center is usually the sweetest. They have a lovely soft texture and are a delight to eat. They are even better when they have been chilled in the fridge for a while!
A smoothie made with the red variety always looks so tasty to my eyes! 😉
Dragon fruit apparently improves eyesight and hypertension while aiding digestion. It is also rich in vitamin C, calcium and phosphorus.
So go out and eat some dragon fruit today! I am sure you will enjoy it! 🍍

Hey @jockey
I was going to say, they are everywhere here in China! Here they called 火龙果 Huolongguo, a.k.a: Fire Dragon Fruit.
I personally find them to taste a little bland in comparison to other awesome fruits from South America, but maybe that's because I never actually get my own from a good market that imports top-quality fruit and rather am always offered little dragon-fruit cubes in fruit platters.
Still, whenever I see one I will bite into it, and they have found their way in my smoothies on more than one occasion!
By the looks of it though, those little suckers must be chock full of nutrients! I wonder where they get their white color from?
Do I know of any other fruits with white flesh? #ScratchesHead
They're certainly incredibly beautiful and eccentric-looking fruits! Fun little post :)

I've never tried one but they grow heaps where I am. Now I know how good they are for you I will give one a try tomorrow, especially because I have hypertension and can regularly go into the 200's over 100's, which means a trip to ER. Thanks for the info, @jockey
