The sahel is derived from Arabic word "sa il" meaning coast in figutative sense. It is ecoclimatic and biographic zone of transition in africa between the sahara to the north and south. having semi-arid climate, the sahel part of africa include norhtern senegal, southern mauritania, central mali, northern Burkina Faso, extreme south of Algeria, Niger,extreme north of Nigeria, central Chad, extreme north of Eritrea, Cameroun etc.IMG_20180130_154806_965.JPG
Sahel savannah is mostly covered in grassland with area of woodland and shrubland. It is dominated by annual grass species such as Cenchrus Biflorus, Aristida Stpoides while species of Acacia arr the dominant trees, Commiphora Africana. during the long dry season, many trrrs loss their leaves as a means of adaptation to survival. grazing animals are found there including African wild dog, dama gazelle etc
Traditionally, most of the people in the sahel savannah have been semi-normads, farming and raising livestock in a system of transhumance. Polygamy and child marriage are common this region.
