I once saw a ring-necked pheasant freshly hit by a car just flopping around on the side of the road so I stopped, picked it up, dispatched it with a quick neck spin, popped it into the trunk and continued on my way home. A few minutes later I heard a thump, thump, thump in the trunk. The bird was still alive! This time I took greater care in my dispatching duties. That bird did not have a single broken bone so it must have been just tapped on the head when first hit. It was delicious. Michigan has since passed a bill that you can't eat road kill.
