Finding Healing Through Gardening: Update

in veterans •  6 years ago  (edited)

The garden has managed to survive two days of rabbits. The tomatoes still need transferred out of their buckets. The soil for the buckets is sitting in the front yard and I just haven't transferred them yet. It needs to be done very soon.

The tools were an emergency measure to make sure the plastic stayed down. I have a few old trailer trusses i can lay on the plastic to get my tools away from the elements.

It doesn't look fancy (and neither will the trusses) but it's cost effective!

The corn is doing pretty good. There are two plants at the front left that look like they are struggling but they will ok

The green peppers took the transplanting hard. Many are wilted and this is the best-looking plant

The squash is really loving it.

The cucumbers are just as beautiful looking as the squash

This is the beginning of a rabbit defense system. We have small fencing but I don't really think it is high enough. My wife will be buying some galvanized steel fencing($9 at Lowes) to put around the garden and then the cans will be hooked up to the fence via fishing line. Hopefully, anything that comes near the garden will be scared off when the clanking sound of the cans is heard.

I'm really excited about this garden. Not only will my family have healthier food to eat and assistance with the grocery bill but it will serve as a sort of therapy for me.

There are many stories of veterans with PTSD finding healing through gardening. We've had gardens before but it has been a few years and at this time in my life I need some healing from any avenue I can. It's been a while since I felt this broken. I feel like I am trying to keep my head above water.

I know I just need to keep grinding and I will get out this place of hopelessness I have found myself in for the past few months. The grind is actually one of the hardest parts of trying to maintain a "normal" life. It literally feels like the energy is being sucked out of me many days.

I am hoping and praying adding activities such as gardening to my life will help relieve the many PTSD side-effects I've been feeling recently.

I've read that getting hands and feet in contact with soil helps with depression. I forget why. No matter. It soothes me so I do it as often as my body allows. Hope it brings a bit of comfort on top of the obvious benefits with healthier food and cheaper food.

I'll have to try your can method. Hadn't thought of that but I imagine it'll at least help. Most critters at our place are easily spooked by noises. Except raccoons.

I use the black plastic method somewhere. Probably more this year altho we are very behind with plantings. Plus we have a stupid ground hog getting at our newly planted fruit and nut trees. Hoping to trap and release. I'm also trying out using blankets for weed suppression until this fall when I can either cover with mulch in walkways or pull up to lay down cardboard and straw in planting areas.

Your garden looks like it's doing pretty well. The black plastic might get a little hot for some of the plants. At least I've had that problem in the past. It's really great at weed suppression if you can keep it from flying away lol. Like you all, I use whatever I've got laying around.

Totally forgot about the cardboard and straw method. would have probably been a little cheaper than the black plastic. I am also a little concerned about the black plastic and heat. This will definitely be a learning experience. Thanks for such a great reply.

I have been wanting to start a garden so bad. I love doing yard work and I actually find yard work very therapudic, so I’m sure gardening would have the same effect. Great post!

You can do it! We are also going to be putting out some containers for tomatoes. Container gardening is especially a good idea if you have minimal space. They are lots easier to manage too(i am hoping the plastic on the ground will take away a lot of work from our garden) because weeding is minimal.

Exactly! I wanna do planter boxes and if I have time make a small green house. My uncle has a few grow boxes and he pretty much made them all there own separate green houses and his garden is phenomenal this year already!

Awssome work for gardening

Thanks @funnystuff

Gardening is meditative!

I would have to agree.

I wish I had a green thumb. Great job. Keep it up.

A Jack Russel Terrier would get rid of the rabbit problems. Then you would only have to worry about all the holes he would dig. lol

Do you have a dog?

There is a semi-adopted dog that comes around. Had no idea a little terrier would go after rabbits.
