Veterans Day: The Forgotten History of America's Veterans Day and What It Commemorates

veterans-day-forgotten-history-what-it-commemorates.jpgToday marks Veterans Day. It was first celebrated exactly 100 years ago in 1919, under the name Armistice Day. It was in remembrance of a temporary ceasefire that led to the unofficial end of World War I. Live battle had stopped on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

It's not just the United States that celebrated Armistice Day, and many countries still celebrate it, but under a different name. In Canada it's Remembrance Day, and in the UK it's always celebrated on a Sunday and is referred to Remembrance Sunday.

A century after it was first celebrated, Veterans Day parades and celebrations are held to honor and commemorate veterans. Some even hold a moment of silence at 11am, and it's not uncommon to see the flag being flown at half mast on this day.

No matter what your politics are, Veterans Day is about showing appreciation for those who have made a sacrifice for our country.
