Three shows
- South Park
- iCarly
- Avatar the Last Airbender
Avatar the Last Airbender was added to Netflix in May 2020 and spent 2 weeks as the most watched show on Netflix.
February 2021, Viacom announced they formed a new studio with the creators of the show for several movies and shows 100% for Paramount+.
July 2021, Viacom announced it was pulling Last Airbender from Netflix and moving it only to Paramount+.
iCarly went to Netflix February 2021 and became the number one streamed show that month.
During that time, they produced a continuation series to iCarly geared for adults who watched the show as kids and it’s up now.
iCarly is very likely to be pulled from Netflix in 2022.
Final one is the biggest and that’s South Park.
HBO Max is paying 100 million dollars a year in a 5 year deal for the streaming rights for South Park.
Viacom just announced a 900 million dollar deal with the creators of South Park to make 14 movies and put them only on Paramount+.
It’s very likely in 2025, HBO Max will have the South Park contract pulled on them and lose one of their biggest shows used in nearly every ad for them.
Paramount+ has 42 million subscribers and has added almost 20 million users this year so far.
The strategy though is pretty cool.
- License popular properties to other platforms.
- Preserve the right to make spin-offs, movies and more on Paramount+.
- Get paid a ton of money for licensing the shows.
- Let Netflix & HBO Max go out and market those shows as reasons to subscribe.
- Test to see interest
- Make a spinoff with the money the competition paid them.
- Pull from those streaming services and market Paramount+ as the only place to watch the show which was number one on Netflix & HBO Max last month.
Why I’ve for a year been calling Viacom as a success for the 2020s.
Netflix & Viacom both made 25 billion in 2020.
Difference
Netflix has a Viacom of 230 billion now.
Viacom is 25 billion.
There’s a real chance Viacom can get streaming numbers up and become a 100 billion dollar company in under 5 years.
