While some people can afford top of the line gaming PCs, the reality is that many people can't. Maybe you're like me and have a crappy old laptop, but you're wanting to be able to play some really fun games. I've gathered a list together of some great games that I've played over the years that will run on almost any PC made in the last 10 years! Note: These games are in no particular order.
Limbo
Limbo is a dark and atmospheric 2D puzzle/platformer that came out all the way back in 2010. This game is a blast to play and I've beaten it no less than ten times. If you enjoy a fun challenge, you'll probably love this game. Even on my crappy old 2Ghz Dual Core Pentium CPU, it still manages to get between 20-30fps which is very playable for a title like this. Expect to spend around a few solid hours to beat this game the first time you play it.
Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is a game that I first heard about a couple years ago. I refused to play it for the longest time because I heard that it was a "farming simulator" and while that's true it's SO much more than that! In this game, you decide to leave your boring 9-5 office job to take over your recently deceased grandfather's farm. When you first arrive it's in shambles. You'll have to clear debris and cut down weeds that have become overgrown. Over the course of the game you'll get to not only plant crops and harvest them but also meet and interact with the many residents of the town, raise animals, cook, fish, mine, fight monsters in the mines, participate in the town's many yearly events, upgrade your house, make both friendships and relationships, have kids (if you want), and find the many secrets about this game that make it so special. If you've ever heard of this game and thought "That doesn't sound like something I'd be interested in", seriously give it a try because I thought I'd HATE it, but I now consider it to be one of my favorite PC games and that's saying something!
Portal
Time for our first 3D game! Many PC gamers are aware of this older, but classic title. Made by Valve back in 2007, this game can run well on almost any PC even getting between 30-60fps on my terrible laptop. So much has been said about this game that I don't need to say much. In this game you navigate through various test chambers (aka levels) as you carry a portal gun that can shoot either a blue or an orange portal. You can shoot a portal on surfaces that are usually flat white walls and simply walk or jump through them to go through the other portal that you've made. It's a great 3D puzzle platformer, but just so you know.... the cake IS a lie!
Left 4 Dead
While I could list almost all of the Valve collection of games on this list, this is going to be the last one. It's been years since I've last played it, but the premise is fairly simple... you kill zombies... a lot of zombies... and even witches! This game is fun to play by yourself, but things get really fun if you invite your friends along as you slay zombies together. Work as a team and wipe them all out!
Silent Hill 2
It might be cheating a little to list a game that was originally released nearly 20 years ago, but this game is in my top 5 favorite games of all time for a good reason! In this iconic survival horror game, you play the protagonist James Sunderland as he wonders through the mysterious town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his deceased wife Mary telling him that'll she'll be waiting for him there in their "special place". In this game you'll always be navigating either through very thick fog or near pitch blackness while fighting off monsters, solving puzzles, and trying to figure out just what the hell is going on. I first played this game roughly 15 years ago and it was such an incredible game that it's stuck with me this entire time. Most modern survival horror games have taken inspiration from this game for a good reason. This game isn't available on Steam or any online digital game store as far as I'm aware, but maybe you can pick up a copy from eBay or find a copy somewhere else online.
Final Fantasy 13
I know many Final Fantasy fans will give me hell over listing this game, but there's a good reason why I'm listing it. While it not nearly as good as games such as Final Fantasy 10 or 7, I found this game to be very enjoyable when I first played it all the way back in 2009 when it was first released on Xbox 360... or at least the 40 hours I put into it before my Xbox did the whole red ring of death thing. I've never actually beaten it sadly. The biggest fault with the gameplay is the "auto-battle" option which means you can you button mash your way through most of the early parts of the game which is why this game gets so much hell from Final Fantasy fans. The story and graphics are bar none for a game that will run on almost any PC though which is why I'm listing it. While the PC version wasn't as optimized as it's console counterparts, if you want something that looks visually incredible and has a story that will sink you in for at least a week, I'd definitely suggest giving this game a try.
Minecraft
I've decided to list this game last, not because it's not a great game, but because it's actually a harder game to run than most people may think. This game's recommended CPU requirements for it's current Java Edition is a 3.2Ghz dual core CPU. It's not graphically intensive, but quite CPU intensive. While I've heard that you can install Optifine to improve it's performance on lower-end PCs, I can't confirm that as I haven't played this game in nearly two years. Not much to say about this game that hasn't been said a million times before, but you take control of a character that is dropped into a randomly generated world as you have to gather supplies to craft various things, mine for resources, and fight off the many mobs that come out at night as you try to survive until the morning... or until you get a bed lol.
That's it for now! I may make another list to follow up this one, but these are some great games to check out!
As always, thanks for reading, and I hope you have an awesome day! :)
