I will be reviewing Cuphead today. The game is a Platformer with an amazing 1930s cartoon art style, lets think Mario in its glorious 2D days however, this game was release on September 29/2017 for PC and Xbox one so sorry PS4 players are left out on this one though because its a great game. The game is developed by Studio MDHR. The game is actually a run-and-gun shooter, I didn’t expect anything like what I’ve been playing over the past week. We might forget now so Cuphead is here to remind us how old pre-Hays Code cartoons could be dark, cruel and even shocking in their content, because
It’s a game that requires that kind of patience and skills, and when i mean patience i mean patience, because you are going to die countless of times playing this game, some people refer to this game as the Dark souls of Platformer.
The story surrounding this game is basically where Cuphead and his brother Mughead end up in hock to the Devil through gambling ,("imaging gambling with the devil") and the only way out of debt is to travel around the Inkwell Islands settling Satan’s scores. Cuphead and his brother (The game provides local coop) wander around three different world maps, getting advice and the occasional gift from loitering characters, then finding the Devil’s targets and defeating them in battle.
Before i reviewed this game i read where this game was design to be a boss only game however, the developer decided to create a handful of run-and-gun levels, but these have a specific function. Boss battles are where the fun part really is, your going to die often but to provide yourself with a much better chance you need to pack different sets of charms (your basic perks) and weapons. In order to earn these, you need to find the gold coins scattered throughout the world maps, these gold coins can be found in the run and gun levels however, they will be hard to acquired.
Cuphead to me feels nostalgic not for the fact that it reminds me of the earlier days Platformers but, it some what feels like Contra on steroids and it also have the run-and-gun aspect of Gradius. So what am saying is there is noting actually new here what the developers did was combine a few games from the past with better visuals however, it was perfectly done.
Cuphead is a really addicted game even when it seems like you are dying often in those boss battles you wont give up until you beat the boss, this is where cuphead is at its best, you always want to see whats next each stage adding new threats, new attacks, new patterns and new, unexpected ways to die. Fighting each boss you will have to learn their patterns, then working out an effective strategy for pushing through. Keep in mind though simply learning and practicing the patterns doesn’t always work, because sometimes the boss patterns appear in a different order, or because some of the bosses react to player movements in ways you take a while to work out.
Cuphead's visuals are incredible and the game play is nostalgic which is a easy pick up and play game, creating a stunning run-and-gun boss battle type game that looks straight out of 1930s ‘toons. Cuphead whole presentation in terms of the, audio, the music and the general vibe are unbelievable. Cuphead will be too tough for some players, and you’d have to look to the likes of Nioh or Dark Souls to find something as brutal and unforgiving. Thanks for taking a look at my review! Hope you've enjoyed it and maybe it's gotten you interested in checking out the game! I will now leave you with a video of me show-casting the game difficulty and how this game will take some serious skills and patience to beat those bosses, but Cuphead keeps on bringing you back for more until you do.
Very nice
