So, the nutbar in the North side of the island in Asia
has launched a bomb (theoretically) and it has landed and detonated. Major damage caused, Asia affected heavily and many food crops affected. So if you live in North America and not in the temperate region where you can access citrus most of the year, where do you get your vitamin C if the supply chain is disrupted? Major crops would be potatoes, apples, tomatoes for parts of the year in most of North America but can you produce enough to feed your family sufficient amounts to prevent the sailor dreaded scurvy? Studies have shown with a zero vitamin C intake diet scurvy can begin to show symptoms in as little as 4 weeks.
One of my basic 'preps'? Big box store vitamin C at 1000 mg (more than ten times the 75 mg suggested daily intake) in the 500 tablet container. seal it tight keep it in a cool and dark place you should be good to go for a long time, the bottle is best before stamped for a date about 2 years away from the day we purchased it. One tablet every 3-5 days should keep you in the safe zone . Get 2 or 3 bottles, that's about $30 or for comparisons sake 1/4 tank of fuel in my pickup. Keep your family healthy.
It doesn't have to be as massive as a nut with a nuke, a hurricane (think about this post when orange futures spike post Irma), flood or strong storm event could put you and your loved ones out of touch for a long period of time, should basic vitamin intake be a priority when you might be eating MRE's or other food that isn't really terribly healthful? Alternatively consider well balanced multi vitamins, cover ALL your bases in earnest.
Start somewhere. Be prepared. Buy some vitamins.
I buy that stuff and go thru a bottle regularly.
I have usually 4 of these pills a day, currently so yes, they would last you a long time in the....wild.
For sure.
Practical article man, good work.
People should also learn what natural plants locally can be ID'd for them, high in vitamins/nutrients too.
Rosehips, for ex.
Crazy high in natural vitamin c.
Good job
