[Vlog] SMT launch date set… what about Communities?

in vlog •  6 years ago

Timetable set

So we have a release date for SMTs.

January 15th 2019, SMTs go live on the TestNet and March 24 2019 is the MainNet launch.

That’s pretty precise.

Let’s hope it’s definitive too!

Here are my initial thoughts:

When SMTs were introduced around this time last year and promoted as the ‘big ticket’ item of Steemfest2 in November, I think most people believed we’d be seeing the functionality in Q2 of 2018. Indeed Ned stated (in a Fireside Chat) that SMTs would be launched ‘early 2018.’ So an announcement that they wion’t be ready until Q2 2019, does feel far off.

One piece of the puzzle

I really hope SMTs are successful and do big things for the Steem blockchain however I’m not that wildly enthusiastic about them. My opinions haven’t changed much from a year ago:

I do think the Smart Media Tokens will be far superior than the other token creation protocols out there. However launching the functionality is only one piece in a complex puzzle.

For SMTs to succeed it will need a combination of successful partnerships (with existing and new content creators/ platforms) and developer tools to integrate them.

It’s great that in theory ‘anyone’ can launch an SMT. However the world needs simply more tokens like it needs a hole in the head. It is quality rather than quantity of SMTs that count.

A handful of high profile, high demand, liquid tokens will go a long way to making SMTs a success. I hope the approach to SMTs is more than just ‘create the technology and they will come’ else we could be a long time waiting!

Communities

I hope (at the very least) that the announcement of SMTs in Spring next year, means will be getting Communities functionality by then too.

For me, strong identifiable Communities that are appropriately rewarding the best Content Producers in a given niche is the best (and most simple) way to expand the Steem eco-system, as I've spoken about before:

However, regardless of whether the SMT or Communities approach is the best way forward it os good to have a date that entrepreneurs looking to leverage these tools can work to.

That was the biggest disappointment of HF20, I've actually given up hoping for anything on Steemit, if it happens great, if it doesn't at least I won't be down about it.

The other thing that needs to be fixed is the tags, it is just mental that they only work for 7 days. I have created tags just so my content (like my sci-fi stories) will be easy to find, however after 7 days it's like the tag never even existed.

Ho-hum, focus on the positive I guess; are you coming to Steemfest?

Hi
I just started following you, so I am reading and responding to this post only now...
When I first read about SMT’s I was excited because I thought it could increase or accelerate mass adoption of the platform or at least increase exposure to Steem and Steemit. I also felt any additional use case would be helpful. But I must admit I had concerns about other areas which I thought were important such as improving the mentoring of new users and improving retention.

I think forming Steemit Communities promotes better mentoring, which provides education to new Steemians about the platform, the processes within the platform and the many applications available which work on the platform. I believe helping people achieve monetary success , helping people get exposure within the platform and giving them feedback on their work will improve the quality of posts and help our platform grow by improving retention.

That’s why I think that your idea about focusing on Steemit Communities is a good idea.

It’s like another chapter of Steem journey. I’ve already heard many great steemiens planing for SMT’s on their own. Can’t wait to start seeing new tokens in my Steemit wallet and especially Steem to grow at even faster rate.

I also am not all that enthusiastic about them (with my limited knowledge), and will rather wait and see how the execution and useability follows.

That said, recognize the potential for SMT to genuinely be a game changer if done right... I honestly believe so

so does that mean that the price of steem will remain like this for SMT to be launched before it will shot up or its going to go up and also is it because of the SMT project that has made the price of steem drop.
Because i taught they have stake the price of steem not to go less than $1 but i just reliase is not like that so if anyone can help me get it well.

Steem prices are determined by market forces - Demand and supply. Increased demand will generally mean a push in prices and that is what SMTs could potentially bring to the table

i just like the idea that we are improving the existing steem framework and developing new ways to enhance the steem blockchain.

i believe SMTs is a step in the right direction, especially if we have the right sets of investments that will draw more people to the steem blockchain.

It is quality rather than quantity of SMTs that count.

I so agree with you both on the need for only well done SMTs and the potential presented by communities. I think the technical people behind this platform just don’t get how important that feature is for growing the platform.

thats good

It's only 7-9 months away 😞 🤣

Thanks for this mate when you back in the gym

"I really hope SMTs are successful and do big things for the Steem blockchain."

I thought, we have the same hope. You have a quick reaction. The most important thing is how the SMT goes into a good development platform. So there is no one bad influence after. This then must have a balance with several tokens that will be released by investors. in the end quality and quantity are the two factors that must be truly considered.

Thanks @nanzo-scoop, good job.

Great seeing you in NYC @nanzo-scoop, this is Kirk of @sndbox via my personal blog. I agree with everything, especially the statement below:

For SMTs to succeed it will need a combination of successful partnerships (with existing and new content creators/ platforms) and developer tools to integrate them.

At this stage... "we" (Steemit Inc. + all of us) have 6 months to prepare for SMTs entering the ecosystem. There's a lot to prepare for and I hope that the Inc. team begins to open up and ask the existing community here for support. No sense in shouldering the load internally when there are a ton of existing applications and bootstrapped communities that could help (tremendously) in creating -

SMT On-boarding Resources - explainer websites / tutorials / case-study examples / videos / well designed infographics.

Marketing - delegating liaisons for online forums and physical meetup locations, reserving proper social media handles, activating these handles (early) to cultivate an audience around them.

I'm sure Steemit Inc. has a proper roadmap for each of these items. But why not leverage existing Steemians to accelerate these efforts?

I have a good feeling about it, but it doesnt mean that we wont have any kind of abuse here. Some users will still try to buy upvotes or find other abusive ways. But hopefully it will be a reason for many new users to join the platform and make it a better place for everyone.
Enjoy your weekend :)

Hi, @nanzo-scoop I Appreciate Your Great Work on Steemit and I have just Upvoted You and I Hope return your favor https://steemit.com/blog/@steemuserfacts/google-launch-new-android-version-android-9-0-pie-must-read
