Mk2 Golf GTI ABF Conversion Part one | Why choose ABF?

in volkswagen •  7 years ago

IMG_0459.jpgThis weekend marks the start of the Planet Auto guys mainly Tim, converting our MK2 Golf 16 KR which we've had over 10 years engine which ceased to live after the oil pump failed (giving minimal warning, 20 seconds ish) to a 2 litre ABF.

When the engine went bang, meaning the bottom end and the block seized we had a few options on which way to progress, 1.8T, VR6, KR or ABF - ok there are other R32 etc event VTEC Honda, however as the car is 26 years old we wanted to go for a standard look with more oomph.

That was the ABF, an engine that was standard in the Volkswagen Mk3 Golf 16v GTI, now this engine looks identical to existing one, however it is 1cm taller, for this it's known as a tall block.

Now both engines have 139bhp, however the ABF has far more torque lower in the revs pulling 0-60 in around 6.3 encroaching on Cossie times, and the KR does it in about 7.6 (7.8 by the VW book), which is fair bot quicker, and economy loses about 3mpg.

Now there's the reasoning behind why we chose the ABF, also all existing parts form the KR fit staright on and it also uses the same distributor and loom.

around 16 hours they reckon for the conversion... well, we will see on Friday, wish us look.
