The first volcano was found in 79 A.D. when Mount Vesuvius famously erupted and destroyed the Roman town of Pompeii, according to Geology: Geoscience News and Information. Vesuvius remains the only active European volcano as of 2014.
Vesuvius is located near the city of Naples on the west coast of Italy. It is located inside the crater of another now inactive ancient volcano known as the ancient Somma volcano. Historically, Mount Vesuvius has been responsible for some of the most massive volcanic eruptions on the entire continent of Europe. As of 2014, its last activity was an eruption in 1944
