How can I get my W2 online?
W2 is a form submitted to an employee and the Internal Revenue Service stating annual wages and corresponding taxes withheld from the employee's paycheck. It reflects the annual income and taxes withheld from the previous year and is a legal obligation of the employer. It must be submitted by January 31 of each year to give employees enough time to prepare their taxes before the April deadline.
If you didn't get your W2 from your employer or just misplaced it, don't worry! Requesting a copy of your W2 is easy online. Follow this simple guide to get your copy.
Here's a step-by-step guide to submitting your form in the IRS online tool:
- Enter the same name you used for that year's tax return on line 1a. Use the first name on that return if it was filed as a joint return.
- For line 1b, enter your Social Security number. If it is a joint return, enter either the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) or the Employer Identification Number, which was on the requested form. Lines 2a and 2b are for the middle name and other tax identification numbers listed on the joint return only.
- Enter your current name and address (with the city, state, zip code, and country if you are outside the US) on line 3. If you listed a different address on the form is requested, enter it online 4.
- If your form will be sent to someone other than you, use line 5 to enter the name, address, and a number of the person receiving it on your behalf.
- Enter the form you filed for your taxes online 6. You can only have your certified copy if you are using form 4506. Check the box at the bottom right of line 6.
- Enter the period you are requesting on line 7 (in the mm / dd/yy format). Note that you can request up to 8 W2 forms for every 4506.
- If you are using a 4506-T form, check the box next to line 8 to confirm that you want a transcript of your W2 information. If you are using a 4506 form, use lines 8b and 8c to enter the number of copies you want and the total cost (number of copies x $ 50 per copy) of your orders, including all attachments.
- The last step is to prepare your payment. You can use a paper check or money order, but make sure it is payable to the Internal Revenue Service. If the IRS refunds the payment, check the box next to line 9 if you want someone else to receive the order and you want them to also receive the refund.
- Put your signature and date on your form. Both signatures are necessary for your joint returns.
- Create a copy of your application form and mail the original to the IRS. Please note that your request may take two months or more to process. You can contact the IRS at 1-800-908-0046 if more than two months have passed and you still have to receive your copy.
