Spring Hath Come! Flower Explosion, Hot Cars & Boys in the Ocean

Now That Winter is Officially Gone...

I look back and think "well, that wasn't so bad". It's just a distant memory now that everywhere I look are trees with flowers, ditches with flowers, people's gardens blooming back to life everywhere, including my own spring surprises on our land.

Nova Scotia is called "Canada's Ocean Playground" but it could equally be named "Canada's Flower Wonderland". It's one of the first things I noticed when we moved here, just the absolute abundance of wild flowers everywhere. It's a magical place (9 months of the year) and I'm lucky to call it Home.

The Maple trees doing their flower thang.

IMG_6783.jpg

I have no clue what kind of tree this is but I pretty much jumped for joy when I rounded a bend and it came into view. I started taking photos of it and a man on a riding lawnmower drove by me and was smiling at me, it must have been his, and I think it made him happy to know his tree brings others joy.

Above: Flowers in ditches. Below: Soon to be flowers in ditches (lupin)

IMG_6789.JPG

Everywhere I walk I see lupin greens, it's going to be a stellar year for them by the looks of it. There is nothing better than seeing the lupins taking over the Nova Scotia highways every summer.

IMG_6805.JPG

I don't even know what to possibly say about those dandelions in the ditch, can we even call that a ditch? Those babies are growing out of gravel. They are real inspirations and I have a lot of good feelings whenever I see flowers and trees growing out of rocks. Life will always go on. No matter the obstacle.

IMG_6822.JPG

Wild Strawberry also doesn't seem to give a care about growing in gravel and ditches, their foliage is lining the sides of the road, and soon will be the beautiful white flowers followed by teeny tiny strawberries. Mmmm...dangerous picking there, but worth the effort. No children allowed obviously.

IMG_6797.jpg

These were pussy willows last week, I love how they burst to life.

IMG_6794.JPG

This one sort of looks like the first tree, but with white flowers instead of pink. If you know what this is please feel free to share.

Have I killed you with flower and tree overload yet? One last pic I promise, then I'll get to the next subject :)

Some Birds

The one with the fanned out tail was singing a really beautiful song...(don't look bottom left corner, more flower trees!)

A few folks around here name their houses...

And I decided yesterday that is a life goal of mine now hahaha, to have a home with some land and then name it, I will be just like @winstonalden and @donnadavisart with their charming Toad Hall sounding like it comes straight out of "The Wind in the Willows".

That's the view from ground level.

Searenity has a pretty sweet view of St. Margaret's Bay too (though it's about to be obscured by deciduous trees.

It's Tourist Season

I always wanted to live somewhere that I could complain all haughtily about the damn tourists, life goal achieved. There are many tour busses going by to see historical Peggy's Cove Lighthouse and the incredible rocks now, and the best part is all of the sweet cars and bikes that come out to play too. Yesterday I got passed by about 40 Corvettes until I finally took out my camera and got some shots thinking maybe some of my friends here would like to see them. There are always car enthusiasts driving out in big gangs to Peggy's Cove.

The Boys Wanted to Swim in the Ocean!

It was so warm and muggy out yesterday that they just knew it was time to break in the old lifejackets and get out back for a swim. They didn't care when I warned them that the water would be freezing. Gotta love children. I was like that too when I was younger, you couldn't keep me out of water if the sun was out. I love having the ocean in our backyard, these next scenes are basically our whole summer. Paradise.

This is why we left the city...and even though we suffer a bit financially, I will take this any day over our old suburbia with no trees and no people around enjoying nature, everyone in their houses...it almost felt like a zombie apocalypse some days when I would walk around our old neighbourhood. Very few birds...houses almost touching...permaculture non existent...plastic, regulated, playgrounds, no one around just blue lights coming out of windows. We wanted to live somewhere where the whole land was our kids' playground, and we found it.

IMG_6828.JPG

IMG_6825.JPG

IMG_6831.JPG

A toe in. I think they finally believe me now that it's cold, yet that doesn't deter them. They form a plan to just run in as fast as they can. Smart boys!

Then Stryder

And then they both run back to Mom and Dad needing immediate towel snuggles!

Thanks for joining me on another beautiful day in Canada's Ocean Playground, the best place be for the coming financial Apocalypse.

IMG_6807.JPG

Here's one of many beautiful places you could buy ;) Seriously the land and homes in Nova Scotia are so undervalued (because there's not a lot of "work", and we all know work is all that matters in life right). We are the best kept secret in this whole country.

One final piece of awesomeness, we are getting a visitor from the USA that we met on STEEM come this weekend, we're super excited to meet our buddy @michaelevans in Real Life!!! After all of these walks, I'm sure he'll be the one showing me around LOL! Looking forward to it Michael and I hope you have a safe journey here.

You made the right decision.
Big cities, towns and estates aren’t going to be a place anyone will want to live in the future, the crime and degradation is only going to get worse.
We sold up in London more than a decade ago and moved to the countryside, it was the desicion we ever made, we’re healthier, wealthier and happier.
You’re giving your boys a fantastic childhood away from the decay of western society, you should be very proud.

Aww, I'm so glad you heeded the call and got the eff out of the city!! Smart!! xoxo

Hi!
The "dandelions" are probably Tussilago farfara , also known as coltsfoot, The yellow blooming bush is probably Forsythia x intermedia also known as Border Forsythia.
The pink & white blooming trees are probably some sorts of Magnolia.

Wow, thank you so much for the identifications @valkyrion!!

spot on

Nice ID's!

I think you found a new friend @haphazard-hstead! xoxo

The first season's dip brought back childhood memories from Boutiliers Point. 😎

Awww....nice..... <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 Can't wait to have you out here, is there a count down happening yet? I know there's ice cream at the Whale's Back...!!

Yeah, no gasping or panting was decernable in the most recent episode of Novacadian's Nova Scotia Biking Tours. Started packing a rain poncho in my saddle bag, declaring weather to no longer be an excuse for not riding. A few major chores away would be my best guess-ta-mit. 😎

I am super excited for you to get a truckin...

Hiya @marionbowes! Have you been on break? 😎

ha. sort of, I am in Ontario and I moved my mother from her home in Orangeville to an assisted living apartment in Newmarket. Not too bad overall except my parents had a 2700 sq ft home full of stuff. So two dumpsters later and lots and lots of donations and other garbage I am still here. But I need a Nova Scotia break so I will be home on the weekend and returning to Ontario in June. whew. makes me tired just thinking about it

...makes me tired just thinking about it

You have me wanting a nap just thinking about it. 😎

well i am getting older and this is not easy. I have done a lot of hard things in my life..this one takes the cake

why yes. caramel sea salt. that is why I ordered. I do believe I won the bet.

How nice to see all those flowers. Amazing how fast it happens, isn't it? Boston is leafing out much faster than Toad Hall. I left work Friday and the Commons were just twinkling with flowers. Monday morning it was BOOM bright green.

Thanks for the mention! You know, you don't need a fancy house to give it a name. I had a friend who referred to their rental cottage as "Rottingham Manor."

I can't believe the boys went for a swim already! True adventurers!

HAHAA Rottingham Manor, well...good point! Why wait, let's name the rental lmao!! I'll chisel the sign in the best plywood hahaha :) :)

It takes so long to 'leaf out' over here, just glad there's at least some flowers now!

Firstly let me say that I try to have the positive look at past Winters and thing, "Well, it wasn't too bad in retrospect" But this year I am holding hard and fast to my curmudgeonly New England scowl and saying this Winter was horrid!

Now that I got my cantankerous ha-rumph out of the way. Let's move onto flowers, my favourite!

I am intrigued by that pink bloom and I want whatever it is. I first thought perhaps it is a form of Weigela, but they have more of a azaela style bloom and bloom more with the foliage not before. Then I thought, ornamental cheery or almond? But, I think it must be just one of the many variety of Magnolia. The other shrub with the white daisy-like flowers, that is a Magnolia, a star magnolia to be exact, so perhaps the pink is simply a pink variety. Our more traditional tulip magnolia is beginning to open it's buds. Interesting fact is that Magnolia are such an ancient species, they pre-date bees, butterflies, moths and such pollinates and are pollinated by beetles. ( I know nerd alert, right ;) )

The lovely little purple flowers look like American Pasque flowers (may day flowers) They are lovely. I think that's what those are (I hope if I'm wrong others will correct me, because I am fascinated by plants and love to learn the correct names of things)

I love the catkins of pussywillows. When I was little I used to collect up the pussywillow fuzzy buds and pretend they were miniature puppies with one of my favourite miniature model dogs. I was forever pretending my toy animal collection were having babies, no wonder I hatch eggs each Spring.

Isn't it lovely to live by the sea? And the return of the shore birds for me always makes me pause and thank my location again. We have blue heron, snowy egrets, and osprey that come back each Spring and they are already fishing our shores and building nests. I love it when they osprey chase off the red-tailed hawks. Those will eat my chickens whilst the osprey like the fish better, so I always root them on when they chase away a hawk.

As for naming your house, do it at any house. Our house, which I wish we had called stag hall (as I love deer and antlers and collect them up) but when we got Toad Hall, @winstonalden was re-reading the wind and the willows and the name just stuck. It used to be called 'the coop' when @winstonalden's Grandmother was still alive and lived here, as she was called 'bunny' and thus it was the bunny coop.

We have our antique cape house that we call Bag End, because it truly does look like a hobbit house. and I did over a barn there into a tiny house/cottage and it's called 'fern cottage' because it sits under a huge old tree in the shade and I can grow ferns there, and I love ferns so it was my excuse to say, "Well I'll have to buy more ferns if it's going to be called fern cottage" :)

When you get your new house, the name will come to you.

Your boys are brave. I am usually the first in the water around these parts, but it is still too chilly for me, although I have waded up to my ankles, but that hardly counts and doesn't merit a life jacket.

Well, I've rambled on long enough. Keep enjoying Spring (and thumbing your nose at Winter, or I'll do that for you.)

Awwww, I can't wait to see a post one day about Bag End... !! I couldn't imagine your place being Stag Hall now that I've heard Toad Hall so many times, and I love Bunny's Coop lmao. Really great names Donna.

I'm so happy reading that the big birds are back in full force there, I'm hoping to see our Heron soon.

Hey @lyndsaybowes what a beautiful post .. and those flowers look amazing!! I need to get my spring post done, but I've been struck down with toothache this week :( I loved the picture of the flowers growing out of gravel .. it reminded me of when I left college, I started working for the council during the summer holidays. Occasionaly I would be sent out on a a refuse round and at the end of each day we used to offload at the tip. One section of the tip was old and we used to drive past it on the way in. It had been closed for about 5-10 years and they had simply covered it with a shallow layer of mud. Amazingly and over the top of meters of toxic sludge nature had already started to reclaim the land, trees and flowers were growing and birds were singing from the tree branches. I'll never forget it, for it instilled an important lesson in me. Thank you for this beautiful post @lyndsaybowes

I'm so sorry about your freekin tooth, that's awful...your latest article looks incredible, I can't wait to read it tomorrow with my coffee, good job putting that together even with all the pain!

I'm glad to hear you've had a similar experience with the Earth regenerating. We're vain to think that we can destroy the Earth, she'll be fine, but we can destroy ourselves...

Waw ... it turns out the spring there is more beautiful than I imagine .. I am amazed to hear flowers can grow in trenches and rocks ,,
this will make our eyes are not melting looking at the beautiful Nova Scotia ..
You are very lucky if you can enjoy all that sist.
I also salute to see a small strawberry tree that is able to grow on the rocks, they are so vibrant, so different in my area, I once planted a strowberry tree and it takes a very hard effort to take care of it and make it to survive because of the weather here.

OOoh wow, that's sad that the strawberry won't grow well in Indonesia :'( The climate is too nice I guess, Strawberries like to live in very poor conditions hahaha!

Haha....😁😁
In Indonesia only a few areas that can grow strawberries with a good, cold temperatures.

Awesome walk Lyndsay! Yeah, you guys are in a great spot to be when the shit hits the fan!

Its getting real close and I cant wait!!!!😀
Ive been here in Reading, PA since Saturday. Ive only gone outside a couple of times, so Im ready to get on my way! Just one more day! Thank You so much Lyndsay and Ill see you all soon!!

Hhehe!! See you soon indeed! I hope the weather here stays beautiful for you!

It is what it is Ill just be happy to be there

Aww..such wonderful photos, and I got so much to say. hmm. ok Searenity. Almost bought that place, that's up on Bremner and so are some of those shots of the Bay. Beautiful up there. Love, love all those flower shots. I dont think those yellow things are dandelions. I think they are a wild type of daisy. Do not be telling too many folks about our beautiful ocean playground. shhhh. Canada's best kept secret. Cant wait to beach it with my boys. oh la la. Yes lupins so beautiful, I can not wait to see them all. It looks like we are going to get a huge amount for sure. I love that green house with the dormers. What do you think we should call our place. it is deserving of a name. let us think of one. something like um. The chalet on the hill. just wait till I paint it black. the black chalet on the hill. lol

We're gonna have to see how she looks in a couple years, yes after the paint job, and see what you feel. Definitely deserves a name!!!

yes...let us wait till it gets painted.

What an awesome walk. I love the trees, flowers and water! I am like the boys. Where is the water, but right now I think mine is a little warmer! lol Hope you have great weather for the weekend and have a great visit with your friend!

That was a spectacular blog post Lyndsay! You had my heart with all the flowers 🌹🙌 can't get enough of those.... not at all!! What a good choice you made to snuggle in on the coast! It sure does look very appealing in so many ways. So happy for you and your sweet family 😙
🌹💛🌹

Thanks Jill, I'm glad you liked all of the flowers haha and didn't think it was overload xoxo Thank you for the positive empathy!!! Love you!!!

You are welcome x2!! You really got me thinking! I have not considered positive empathy before! ... i like it. 💛👏 something new today! TY ✌

I had almost forgotten how magical Nova Scotia is! Like the face of a past lover, there, but the details were sketchy.

What a delight to see those blooms after the winter has been put to bed. Your first picture is stunning! So happy to see kids running wild and free.

I thouroghly enjoyed reading this. Thank you!

That's great @dswigle, did you live here or visit here before?

There must have been a Corvette show near by.

Canada is a beautiful place, not because of the beautiful flowers or the sea, the good Canadians make Canada so beautiful and amazing. success for @lyndsaybowes always.

Oh my gosh! Those pics are beautiful! How exciting that you get to meet up with another steemian?! 💜😍

Thanks SiSTAR <3 <3 <3

  • First picture you've taken is far beyond amazing, I really liked it...
  • seems all residents have rich cars in there...
  • Great ocean...thanks everyone for keeping it clean...
  • what a good habit, letting kids play safe...

Great, thanks for stopping by and seeing our community @bitpost! The cars are usually not from around here, the owners all get together, maybe from across our province, and drive together as a group on the weekends.

It's amazing how quickly we forget the winter, lol. It looks like you got the correct ID's on your mystery plants already, from @valkyrion. Happy spring!

Happy Spring to you too Haphazard! <3 <3 xoxo Much Love!

@lyndsaybowes, You made day for me. Such adorable flowers everywhere. Nature exchange winter to spring and whole environment changeable. Plants, trees, flowers popping up with nicely. Birds also being happy. Nice to look your both kids water activities.

Nothing like getting out in the unspoiled nature. Especially in Spring time.

The flowers are pretty sister, I love it very much,
You always write very long posts and beautiful photos, 😍 I am proud

Do you know your future home's name? Mine is the Nemeton (the inner sanctum of a sacred Druid grove). :)

Oh my goodness, such a perfect fit for your future homestead hehehe!! Loves it!!

I have no clue for myself, it will take a lot of thought...gotta see where we end up too, probably name it after a bird knowing me hahahahaha!!!

Jurassic Park! Since birds are dinosaurs. Ba dum ching. 😉

beautiful spring come, flowers spread their cuteness how cuty they are. outstanding photography. we love spring ♥
also enjoy your spring.

Thanks @moon-girl, I hope you have a very beautiful springtime as well.

The weather is getting better: flowers bloom and guys go to the sea.
Life is rising up after the dark winter!!!

We are ready to party it up for summer holidays soon! xo Thank you for visiting my blog again today @monica90 :)

It always amazes me too to see roots of plants pushing through something you would have to take a pick axe to break it up! Thanks for sharing 🤓

That's a great way to describe it @jonyouder!!

the winter is a very beautiful climatic stage and I think it is perfect to share with family, they are very good photos

kanada is a beautiful place, not because of the beautiful flowers or the sea, people in the land of Canada such as @ thendsaybowes make Canada so beautiful and amazing. success for @lyndsaybowes always.

So wonder pictures you are taken mam... your boys are looking so cute... i am feeling really happy after seeing their happy faces ☺
