Exodus has been around for more than three years now. In this time, the development team behind the wallet has released multiple beta versions that were hashed out based on community feedback, as well as advice from expert cryptocurrency users.
When Exodus first debuted, it featured a unique email-based backup method. When first creating their Exodus wallet, users would need to sign up with an email address, which would be used as part of the wallet recovery process later on, since Exodus would automatically send a recovery email to this email address.
However, this was later considered to be an insecure way to back up one’s funds, since anybody with access to this email address would then have access to the Exodus wallet, since it could easily be recovered with the recovery email.
Because of this, following the release of Exodus version 19.2.1, the feature was retired and was instead replaced with the standard recovery phrase system used by most other wallets. With that said, if you are an older user of Exodus, or haven’t used Exodus since version 19.2.1, your wallet might still be backed up with the older email backup system, which you’ll need to use to recover your wallet.

How to use the Exodus Email Backup Feature
- Following a fresh installation of the Exodus wallet application, you will be greeted with the above home screen.
- Click on the Restore from Backup option to begin the recovery process.
- Exodus will generate a prompt asking whether you would like to restore your wallet using either a 12-word recovery phrase, or your backup link.
- Select the Backup Link (from email) option.
- Exodus will then ask you to provide the recovery link.
- You will need to find this recovery link in the email address you initially used when registering for an Exodus wallet (prior to software version 19.2.1).
- This should look something like the above. Simply copy the link address provided in your recovery email and paste it in the recovery field. Click the OK button when you are ready.
- Exodus will then restart while it recovers your wallet.
- If you followed every step correctly, your pre-19.2.1 Exodus wallet should now be restored with all of its balances intact. You may need to enter your password to login to the wallet if you originally set one back when you created the wallet.
