Cryptocurrencies make sending value between users anywhere in the world an extremely simple process. You simply enter their wallet address, choose an amount to send, and usually pay a small transaction fee to ensure the transaction is completed and confirmed in a timely manner.
However, although this is usually a simple task for experienced cryptocurrency users, there can be some subtle nuances that you need to be aware of when transacting with particular cryptocurrencies — like Ethereum. Ethereum addresses can be described as “mixed case” addresses, in that their characters (hexadecimal, 0–9 and A-F) can be either upper or lower case.
In previous versions of Exodus, entering the wrong case for an address would cause the funds to be sent to an invalid or incorrect address, essentially losing the funds forever. New versions of Exodus, however, contain a built-in feature that automatically checks the validity of an Ethereum address by running a checksum before you are allowed to confirm the transaction.
If you keep coming across this error, follow our simple guide below to solve it once and for all.

Fix ‘address is not formatted properly’ Error
- To understand how the error presents itself, we’ll run a test case. Open your Exodus wallet and navigate to the Ethereum part of your portfolio.
- Click the Send button to open up the transfer window. You will then be able to enter the address you wish to send ether to, in addition to the amount.
- Here, we have entered a completely valid address. The internal checksum performed by Exodus does not throw up any error, so it is safe to send funds to this address.
- Now let’s see what happens if we change one of the characters in the beginning of the address. We’ll change the ‘e’ in 0x913e to the capital letter ‘E’ (forming 0x913E).
- As you can see, this causes Exodus to display the “address is not formatted properly” error. This can also happen when scanning a low quality or improperly formed QR code — again causing Exodus to display the error.
- If you see this error, it is best to manually enter the recipient address and check this several times. You will usually find that there has been a case error at some point in the address — correcting this will remove the error and allow you to send your funds without issues.
