Walmart made 523 billion in 2020.
Amazon made 386 billion.
27% less

The last three months though are incredibly close.

Walmart made 138 billion.
Amazon made 113 billion.
Gap of 19%

And the closest it ever came was the final 3 months of 2020, where Amazon made 125 billion and Walmart 134 billion for a gap of only 7%.

To compare with 2016 just for a moment.

Amazon made 135 billion that whole year.
Walmart made 482 billion.

Walmart made 3.5x as much as Amazon just 5 years ago and now the gap is really close.

Looking at Amazon’s revenue though, it’s possible that they actually surpass Walmart in the final 3 months of 2021.

Amazon averaged 86 billion in revenue for the first 3 quarters of 2020.
They made 125 billion in the final quarter.
45% jump over the average.

63 billion was the average for the first 3 quarters of 2019.
87 billion made in the final quarter.
A 38% jump

53 billion was the average for the first 3 quarters of 2018.
72 billion made in the final quarter.
A 35% jump

39% is the average jump in revenue Amazon makes in the final quarter of the year versus the first three.

Walmart doesn’t normally get a huge pickup in revenue in the last quarter. This means Amazon if they just get about half their normal end of the year bump, they will have very likely the first quarter ever surpassing Walmart.

And 10 years ago, Amazon’s revenue was only 12% of Walmart.
