I am glad to see that D-Day veterans are being honored today, after two years of pandemic restrictions that made it nearly impossible to do so (at least in-person). This may be one of the last opportunities to acknowledge their achievements and sacrifices, while some of them are still with us.
Back in 2004, I sat on a plane next to a veteran of the 29th Division, which landed on Omaha Beach (the landing site that saw the heaviest fighting on D-Day). I asked him what it was like. He said: "They call us the Greatest Generation. But really we were the generation that was lucky not to get killed." He then described his experience in more detail, that I cannot easily reproduce here. I had read numerous accounts of that day. But it was still fascinating and moving. If you've ever seen the first 15 minutes of "Saving Private Ryan," you will have some sense of what it was like (that part of the film is highly realistic, even though some other parts are less so).
