Painting Miniatures: Project Chaos Dwarfs #15

in warhammer •  7 years ago

This is a work in progress and has quite a bit more to it in order for me to call it finished but it is a big enough project for me to break it down and show you parts of what I've done. It's Drazhoath the Ashen from Forge World or the good old Chaos Dwarf Flying Bull as we hobbyists often call it. This resin model is quite big and bulky and I've started working on it months ago, then kind of abandoned ship (not just painting him but painting in general) and since I started painting again I haven't really started on him yet.

Progress step by step:

Had to clean it and fill the gaps with green stuff since these models even though very nicely sculpted with loads of details have massive gaps sometimes.

I sprayed it black then white. It was cold outside so I decided to try the Vallejo primer for airbrush. To be fair I wish I waited for the weather to become warmer.. the paint is constantly peeling off and now I'm at a point where it means I have to redo a whole area because of a small chipped edge.. Started with the skin and sprayed a few layers with the airbrush building some general idea about the colours, shades and highlights.

Next off was the more detailed part of the skin working my way with glazes and shades to make the shadows deeper and the highlights pop a bit more.

After I was done with the skin I started doing the armour. I decided I'd go for blueish non-metallic metal for the base part of it and warm non-metallic gold for the ornaments.

The gold parts really made the model come alive and gave it a more finished look.

The rider of this otherworldly beast is a magician chaos dwarf and he's sitting on something like a throne which I haven't really started on yet. I do have more work on the fire as well as on the leather parts for this one but it is getting there.

Colours Used so far:

As you know I use mostly Vallejo and GW Citadel paints and there wasn't any change in that this time.

Skin

Base of the armour

Gold

Wings

These I used in addition to the skin on the nose and parts that connect joints like elbows/knees.

I'll keep you updated on this one and put another post once it is finished.

I'm always in awe how you pick tones for them, good job dude :d

Thanks! I used to struggle before and always try and look at references of others work. Now I try and pick references from actual sources and then add up the rest through my imagination and some colour theory knowledge. Had like 3 photos of bulls opened in front of me.. mine is a bit more cartoony though. Kind of my style.

i really like your gold man. nice job
