Warts are skin growths in the skin and body areas infected with a virus in the human papilloma virus (HPV) virus family, and there are more than one hundred different types of HPV. Verruca is a medical term for warts. The main symptom of human papilloma virus infection is that it triggers the overgrowth of skin cells. While these affected areas appear thick, hard and rough, some types of warts appear flat and smooth. Warts can form anywhere on the body, but are usually seen on hands and feet. Warts are benign, ie they are not cancerous, but they are contagious. Most HPV types cause non-genital warts. Other types cause genital warts. Some types of HPV increase the risk of cervical cancer.
