For this round's Whaleshares NSFW contest the theme is hard light with an on-camera flash.
The Canon 5D markII does not have a built in flash, so it's all down to the Speedlight. After looking through my portfolio, I noticed that most of the photo's with hard light aren't taken with the speed light on-camera, but rather to the side or from above-left/right.

This is actually a crop of a portrait oriented shot, so the highlights show up on the left. I really should clone out that thing in the top right corner...

It was a cloudless sunny day, by the time we started taking photo's the sun was more or less overhead, creating the hard shadows. I used the speedlight to add some fill.

This was an experiment. Take a photo of the ambient light source (the sky) with the lens covered by a diffuse material and a CTO gel. Use that image as a custom white balance, turning the whole scene a dark blue. Stick the CTO gel on the speed light, creating some nice orange light that turns everything it shines on back to 'normal'. It didn't have the result I was going for, but I might try it again someday.
Beautiful shots. I especially like the first one! Thanks @carmineworx
