Wikipedia: a potential use case for blockchain a la Steem

in wikipedia •  7 years ago

Yesterday I was havin a chat with my girlfriend and we got to talking about Wikipedia. More specifically the advertisements that happen once a year on top of their website.

We just went through this here in Germany and so had it fresh in our mind with both of us agreeing that Wikipedia is amazing and that we can tolerate the ads considering the service.

But what if the ads were unmecessary? What if Wikipedia were run on a blockchain similar to Steem or on Steem?

Now this is when the cogs started to turn...

Wikipedia is perhaps the most perfect use case for Steem, as it would provide incentives for all participants and with a modification, could make it much more difficult to corrupt content, all the while eliminating the need for donation drives. These would be replaced by token donations (e.g. 50% of the reward would go to Wikipedia directly) and Wikipedia wouldn't need to beg.

What are your thoughts? Any idea if they are already considering this?
