With the release of the rhino poaching statistics for South Africa in 2017 the news articles have been focused on the drop in numbers of rhino poached over the 2016 numbers. This reduction is only a total of 26 animals. The total number of rhinos poached was 1028, thats 5% of the total South African rhino population. Only three provinces saw a reduction in poaching numbers. Two provinces saw an increase in poaching of 100% or more. 26 less animals poached is nothing in the larger scheme of things,especially as there are less rhino to poach as each year goes by. As rhino become harder to find, other animals will be taken instead and this can be seen in the Kruger National Park statistics - the park saw 24% less rhinos being poached last year but elephant poaching rose by almost 50%.
