Garbine Muguruza finally lifts Wimbledon Women's singles trophy thanking god. She must be happy to lift the trophy after she was left into tears in 2015 final against Serena Williams. She must be thanking god and saying,"thank god! it was Venus, not Serena.
Serena, the younger William sister is away from tennis because she is an expected mother, and there was no clear title winner when the tournament started two weeks ago. The older sister, Venus took the challenge and she was solid till the final to prove Williams' sisters reign at Wimbledon. But, in the end it was 23-year old Spanish sensation Muguruza who wins the heart of spectators watching her on Centre Court.
Serena and Venus has reigned the 21st century Wimbledon era, winning 12 trophies altogether out of 18 championships. Younger Serena shares seven, then older Venus has earned five trophies as well. It looked like Venus will take home another trophy in absence of her sister as she was only eliminated by Serena last year in semifinal. But, 37-year-old ace emotional journey ends a stage later this season, and Muguruza finally made his mark on grass court.
She must not have thought about straight sets victory over the veteran Venus, but she was confident about his aggressive play. It's her new weapon and she took care of the game facing two set points at 4-5 in first set to winning the next nine games with 7-5, 6-0 to defeat Venus.
2016 French Open champion took the guard last season when the Gentlemen's singles representative from Spain and "King of Clay" Rafael Nadal walk out of the tournament after second round. And, here once again Nadal suffered a disappointing fourth round elimination against Gilles Muller in 4 hours and 48 minute, but Muguruza made her nation pride winning the Women's Singles Championship.
Two of the grand slams are already in her bags, and now her next target will be US Open championship. Muguruza have a better chance to maintain the momentum and do not get carried away entering into a tournament as a last grand slam champion. It happened to her in 2016, when she reached to Wimbledon as a French Open champion. We hope she does better this time.
Best of luck....Muguruza.
