Wisdom preserves life: But if they are not a guilty nation, then let my lord keep his distance. Judith 5:21

The book of Judith tells us the story of how a woman with her audacity and her faith in God achieved victory against the enemies of Israel. The story has many interesting moments, and one of these moments describes the personality of Holofernes, the commander of the army sent by King Nebuchadnezzar, when he is advised by Achior.
Achior was a prudent man who came before Holofernes with wise words, but Holofernes was a foolish and bloodthirsty man. The dialogue between Achior and Holofernes is a reminder of a teaching from Proverbs: "Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin" Proverbs 13:3.
Holofernes had decided to invade the entire country of Israel and Achior, a man who knew the region, explained to him who were the men who lived in that country
Achior after narrating the history of this people, gave his advice: "So now, my master and lord, if these people are inadvertently at fault, or if they are sinning against their God, and if we verify this offense of theirs, then we will be able to go up and conquer them. But if they are not a guilty nation, then let my lord keep his distance; otherwise their Lord and God will shield them, and we will be mocked in the eyes of all the earth" Judith 5:20-21.
But facing the advice of Achior, Holofernes was outraged, because for this man wisdom was worth nothing. This is how Holofernes responded: "Who is God beside Nebuchadnezzar?" Judith 6:2.
Holofernes finally lost his life at the hands of Judith for his lack of good judgment, and Nebuchadnezzar's army without its leader was defeated.
Holofernes's actions are a reminder that those who are unable to control their temper and are prone to anger rejecting all wisdom are destined to fall. Wisdom aims to take care of life: "Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it" Ecclesiastes 7:12.
Good advice preserves life. But if they are not a guilty nation, then let my lord keep his distance.jpg
