In the New Testament, the practice of magical arts or witchcraft is considered a form of heresy, that is, a practice of error and therefore a work of the flesh. Those who practice witchcraft cannot follow the path of Jesus, the path of righteousness and mercy, because they are idolaters, and do not accept that everything comes from the wisdom of God, only God can be worshiped, and not the forces or elements of the world.
The book of the acts of the apostles tells us about many situations where the early church had to deal with this problem. And it was during Paul's third missionary journey that an extraordinary event occurred in the city of Ephesus, due to a failed exorcism, many pagans rejected witchcraft to embrace the true faith in Jesus.
Paul, the apostle of the gentiles, teaches us the Book of Acts, performed many signs and wonders before the people: "God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them" Acts 19:11-12.
And so it was that some exorcists, who were not Christians, tried to perform an exorcism invoking the name of Jesus, but the impure spirit answered them: "Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?" Acts 19:15.
And after this, the Bible tells us: "Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding" Acts 19:16.
As a consequence of this, many accepted the faith and converted to Jesus, abandoning witchcraft and the magical arts:
"When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly" Acts 19:17-19.
