There Are Still Dead Witnesses in the Top 100...

in witness-category •  7 years ago  (edited)

There are zombies lurking in the top 100 witness list, even now. Mindless abominations, they shamble around, soaking up votes from living witnesses. Okay, so maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but there are still dead witnesses in the top 100. Over the last year, most of the active witnesses, myself included (at least, when I was really active, before school started), made a strong push to raise awareness about dead witnesses. After all, pitching your vote to a disabled witness node doesn't really serve much of a purpose in securing the stability of the network, which is ultimately what witnesses do.

So, in an effort to raise some awareness and hopefully illustrate the issue, I've compiled a list of disabled witness nodes in the top 100 as well as the major voters behind them:

All figures accurate as of 24 Jan 2017. Information pulled from @drakos Steemian.info. Note: total MVest figures exclude votes with less than .1 MVests of voting weight. Variations between total MVests due to calculation of proxy votes.

As you can see, there is a ton of voting weight that is being left on the table. I'd also like to note two other things.

First, there are a lot of recurring usernames behind these dead witnesses. If you look at the lists I've compiled, you'll see a number of names are voting for multiple dead witnesses. Since these are generally large votes, these is disconcerting. I suspect most of them haven't realized that the witnesses they're voting for are disabled, or that they haven't realized they're still voting for them. Whatever the case, I hope that this will bring the issue to their attention.

Second, and related to the first, many of these disabled witnesses are in the top 100 list solely by virtue of one or a few very large votes. I purposely included the total vote weight and the vote weight of all voters over 100 MVests to illustrate this point: without the few high-powered votes these disabled witnesses receive, they'd be well below the 100 line.

I'm not making any claims as to who these voters should be voting for (though, of course, I wouldn't mind some of those votes). The point of this post isn't to advocate one or another. What I'm trying to bring attention to is that the voting power currently dedicated to these dead witness nodes can, and should, be used to support active witnesses. The purpose of voting for witnesses is to ensure that stable nodes are in place to ensure the stability of the network. Disabled witness nodes don't help in that regard. So, if your name is on those lists, get out there and change your votes!

I am sending this post to steempty packed with the sternest look I can dare to give him.

Haha. Thanks for the help! Steempty has quite a bit of weight behind him, so having him leaving it on the table just seems like such a waste!

I know and remind him almost daily. I am currently trying to set up a real world meeting with him to see if there's any way to convince him to revive the server. All and any advice on how to do so will be most appreciated. There's only so much power little me can have over a whale. :)

Thanks for this update. I will be changing my votes, I'm on the list twice. I actually had no idea

Thank you so much for that. Most of us that are active witnesses spread as much awareness out since the middle of last year. We've made a lot of progress, but we've still got some ways to go. :)

By virtue of these dead witnesses my official rank is 107, but effectively I am at no. 89. Some of those sweet sweet votes would be nice spread out to us lowly witnesses hint hint.

Completely unrelated and only here since I was too lazy to look you up on Discord:

@gmuxx THANK YOU for the heads up about the content thief. He lost his delegation from me and got shamed in front of the whole Israeli community. I do not expect to hear from him anytime soon. He has offended me personally by plagiarising, and he should have known better. I am deeply sorry that I missed a content thief in my community (and even supported him!!!). I will do my best to ensure this does not happen again.

I did bring attention to his post to a couple of big names in the hope of getting the rewards removed but alas, was ignored. Plagiarism is a curse on this platform and I am happy to hear you have taken the steps you have. Great job.

It will not happen again. Not in my community and not on my watch. And if you come across such douchebaggery again, tag me. I was just so embarrassed in this case I didn't know where to bury myself. I trusted him. He plagiarized. I know where he lives and he's lucky I am too lazy to go there and punch him in person.

Ouch, I will remember not to get on your bad side ^.^

Everyone should. I bite when provoked. Hard.

I'm not saying anything, I'm just saying...

Beep!Beep! @shadow3scalpel & listkeeper @chairborne have your six new veterans, retirees and military members on STEEM. We’ll be patrolling by to upvote your posts (because you are on the list) and we'll answer any questions you leave us. Comment by @shadowspub. This is a opt-in bot.

Might it also be that the voters themselves are inactive? I don't know the Steem blockchain well enough to find out.

This is also a possibility. Some of the more well-known names are still active, but it's entirely possible that some are absent altogether, which means their votes are going to persist for the foreseeable future.

wow!!!!!!....thanks for the post...it's really nice post @anarcho-andrei..i like your post..many many thanks for shareing

Man it's really disappointing, but not surprising to see some of those names up there. Honestly, I'm very tempted to remove some of my witness votes to those that I see up there.

As always, do what you think is best for the platform. However, I would argue that any witness worth their salt periodically checks their own votes to make sure they're not also supporting dead nodes.

O I completely agree. If you do an update in a month or so let me know. Any witness still on this list will definitely be cut.

Sounds like a plan! I think I'll do this once a month to keep the issue fresh in people's minds. Thanks for the suggestion.

Your welcome and hopefully this leads to some changes.

this is really good community work you've done here, you got my vote @anarcho-andrei ;-)

Thanks for the words of praise! I just hope people find this helpful/useful, and something comes of it.
