Witness Node Back Online, Updated to Steem v0.19.10

in witness-category •  7 years ago  (edited)

My witness server was back up a few days ago, but I had deleted the block_log and had to resync from scratch since @gtg's block_log.xz archive source was offline for a few days.

I had Steem v0.19.10 running, but after two days it was crawling along slower to sync newer blocks than it did the first few million. After the second 24 hours it only synced up a few million, whereas the previous 24h it had done over 10 million blocks. At that rate, if would probably take me a week to sync up fully.

Then I checked if @gtg's block_log archive was back up online, and it was. So I canceled the slow resync, and dled the block_log.xz, unarchived it, and then ran a replay on the block_log and was up within a few hours today.

I am among the few that are currently running the newest Steem v0.19.10. Seems there are less than 20 people in the top 100 who are ;)

Still using steemfeed-js from @someguy123. Thank you @gtg and @someguy123 for the witness tools you have made :)

Sorry for the downtime. My host finally decided to simply restart the server after days offline, and everything was fine. They had previously not responded to me for 17 hours. Then they tried to get me to connect via KVM to a server that wouldn't take any text or KVM commands. Finally, they simply restarted the server, and everything was working again. It seems like that was too much effort for them to simply do in the first place. I was not very happy with @privex for their support this time around. Then I had the long delays trying to resync the chain from scratch.

Thank you for your patience, to those who have waited for the witness node to get back online. Others have not been so patient and decided to unapprove me as a witness. Oh well, thanks for the support you provided. Maybe you will decide to vote for me again someday ;) Peace.

Please note that depending on your network speed, sometimes it might be better to use uncompressed version of block_log from my servers. It has one crucial advantage over compressed one: it's always up to date (whereas xz version can someone be weeks behind, and that was one of reasons to take it down).

Oh cool. That will be better indeed. It took me 15m to dl the compressed version, and 55m to decompress. I think a straight dl would be quicker overall, at around 35-40m to dl instead of a combined 1:10h.

Can you provide me with the link to the direct block_log? Or do you have a site with all this info on it? Thanks again!

Glad you're back online. It's difficult with tech support issues like this to get satisfactory responses. I'm not sure how your server works but is it just a virtual machine? They couldn't just restart that in the first place? How frustrating!

Thanks ;) Not a virtual machine, a dedicated server ;) Yeah, that's what I said to them, why they couldn't just restart it in the first place... and made me waste time... Frustrating indeed!

I don't understand much of what you talk about in this post, so glad you do and are on top of it. I might try learning a little about this stuff down the road, although more for my own knowledge than to try my hand at witnessing.

Hehe, s'all good, just letting people know what happened. You could learn it like anything, but not really worth it if you're not into it ;) It's all command line work, and then getting vote. It costs about $100 USD per month to host a server, and if you're not in the 80s or higher you won't break even :/

Didn't know it would be back up! You have my support again. Have a good day~

Yup, I had a post the other day about the issues. Back up now ;) Thanks!

  • Don't beg for votes on others posts. You can grow a circle if you read posts that interest you, then comment logically on those posts. Never make the post you are commenting on about yourself as that is an insult to the person who wrote it.

  • Figure out the things than interest you and post on those things. As you build your circle with like minded people using the method I mentioned up above, they will be the audience for your posts as you share common interests. Your posts are all over the place (not necessarily a bad thing) but you run the gamut from planting roses to a post about a wife performing oral on her husband and ... well, partaking in the happy ending. I would hazard a guess that you will find two distinct audiences and might want to decide which interests you, if either really did.

To combine both ideas, have patience and BE YOURSELF. Not everyone likes the same things, but you will not find the ones who do if you are fake here.

Good luck and hope to not see you spamming my friends posts again.
