How Engaged Are Steemit Users in Voting for Witnesses?
That's what this weekly report is all about.
This week's engagement rate for accounts with 100,000 VESTS or more is:
21.56%
That's up 2.7% from last week, with a 3.8% increase in new users.
If you're not sure what a witness vote is, or why it's important, please see my older post Steemit is Free, But Your Witness Vote Determines its Future.
This report uses @arcange's STEEMSQL.
MV
stands for Million VESTS.
VESTS are like vested shares in Steemit and relate to Steem by a ratio (485.112 Steem per MV as of this report).
VESTS impact the weight of your vote on posts and the influence of your vote for Steemit Witnesses.
Here's how I'm filtering the data:
All Accounts
: No filter applied, includes all accounts.> 100,000
: Accounts with 100,000 or more VESTS.> 0 Posts
: Accounts which have posted at least once.> 100k & > 0 Posts
: Accounts with 100,000 or more VESTS who have also posted at least once.Active
: Accounts which have voted, commented, and posted a root post in the last 30 days.
The percentage values in parentheses show the change since last week's report.

@arhag disabled their witness which explains the big jump in inactive witness votes this week. If you're voting for them, you should probably remove your vote for now and give someone else a shot. As I was preparing this report, I noticed I was voting for them also and needed to adjust things. That's why this report is so helpful. :)
If you're voting for any of these inactive witness accounts, you should remove your vote unless you know they are only temporarily inactive:

If you know people on this list, maybe encourage them to set a proxy voter or ask them why they aren't voting right now. Those like myself who are working to move up the witness ranks would sure appreciate their support.
Have You Voted for a Witness?
If you haven't voted yet, please consider setting @lukestokes as your proxy voter. Otherwise, go vote for some Steemit Witnesses you've interacted with and respect to do what's in the best interest of the network. I hope that includes my witness, @lukestokes.mhth.
Again, if you're not sure what a witness vote is, or why it's important, please see my older post Steemit is Free, But Your Witness Vote Determines its Future.
Thank you! I hope you found this useful.

Thanks for the update bud, I hope that more people will take this witness voting serious.

What if Steem Inc forces votes only to the active witnesses? Would that help? I know it goes against voluntaryism in a way, but it's such a waste of vests for witnesses who aren't even active anymore.

No, why would Steemit force anything? Please, don't think this way. There's no major problem here as the system is well secured by the witnesses we have now.

Yeah, no, I was just throwing a hypothetical. Not saying that there's a major problem, just thinking of possible ways to solve that inactive witnesses getting votes problem.

Hi @lukestokes, Thanks for updating us on Witness voting. I think Steemit users don't understand the true meanings of this voting hence they don't spend time on it. Even though there is now proxy option as well yet the response rate is still very low. Anyway, you're serving the Steemit community through your posts so keep up the good work. Love.

I'm learning the platform as I go by activity and engagement and witness voting is something I have more to learn about.
Just read your "Steemit is Free, But Your Witness Vote Determines its Future" post as a starter and set my proxy vote to @lukestokes for the time being.
Thanks for writing about it the topic.

Hey Luke,
Thanks for these, and it's good to see voting activity increasing. I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but I'll ask anyway; have you run the latest bug fix on your witness server?
I was reading about that the other day and apparently quite a few of the top witnesses haven't yet.
Cheers
Cg

very helpful insights, thanks. I have a central question regarding that topic. Background is, i voted for witness early after i started here on Steemit because i thought it's important for the whole platform. Since i don't checked or changed the list, but had in mind that could be a issue. You confirmed that here and i'll look at my list now. But my question is
1. Could Steemit by itself support the witness voting process better? Maybe then it's not necessary to create blog post by engaged Steemit user like you.
What are my points?
I experienced the slider for upvoting appears at a certain level of a user and maybe there could be the same for witness voting, first just to get attention for the importance and second maybe coupled to incentives for high powered users.
Thank you for the reminder!

That's an interesting question. For many, this is just a social media site, and they don't care about the blockchain details undernearth. Some don't want to vote. As long as the network is still secure by the existing witnesses, then this is not a serious problem. I do agree inactive witnesses should at least be displayed differently on the witness voting page. Maybe I'll create a github issue for that.
As to incentives, I think securing your investment by voting for witnesses you trust can be incentive enough. It's possible introducing any other incentive could skew the motivations in undesireable ways.

i think currently it's a freaky function which many including me not fully understand. For the first time you simply vote the top list down to 30 and that's it, some look at all the witnesses and take the time.. but i think not many would do. For the common user it would be great just to hit a button like "top witness vote" and done.
Better visualization on that page for comprehensive view of what's behind of each witness, is it still active some data which matters for voting could be very helpful to give users a more thoughtful decision. The question is: "Why i vote for that witness and not for another?"
From what i know witnesses provide computing power or nodes to stabilize the whole platform, if one shut's down many others can bear the workload to guarantee that everything works fine. The probability of a shutdown or some malfunction can be reduced with more active witnesses.
Because it's vital for the system there should in my opinion some automatism for a) new users (i recognized witnesses by accident) and also for b) recognized Steemians (because they simply forgot the hidden menu entry because they are so busy.. i know that may a excuse but we're a simply human)
What are possible solutions, to take this a bit further:
Currently it's like "Ok, there are 50 in the list.. mmh.. i think i should vote for the top 30 that would help Steemit the most." That were my thoughts as i was on the site for the first time and voted without any deeper knowledge.
But much more important is that many more vote at all and be aware what witness means and how everyone benefits.. like the support of minnows by whales, which is also a social function.
That are my ideas currently.

Hi, I upvoted you as a witness quite some time ago. But do you witnesses ever check who upvoted you (I don't feel this important, but anyway). Somethnig quite unusual happened last week - I posted at some contest and per request resteemed it and the number of followers on my blog dropped from 199 to 120 overnight, yet nothing changed on the page where they are listed. It looked surprisingly strange. So, I don't know who still follows and who doesn't, or am I mistaken, what I'd like to know.
And, at what level the slider for voting appears? And is maybe muting a follower enough for that follower not to receive any appearance of my posts in the feed?

Hello @irastra. Let me see if I can help.
Rarely do I check, but I can't speak for others. I don't intend to treat people differently whether or not they have voted for me or not.
That is quite strange. Maybe there was some incorrect data being reported? I don't see any unfollows here: https://steemdb.com/@irastra/followers
So it's possible the data was just not right which showed 199. Where did you see that? on Steemit.com or somewhere else?
I'm not exactly sure when the slider shows up, but I think it may be 1MV (which is around 485 Steem Power). I'd have to check the code to be sure.
You muting someone doesn't impact how they see you, as far as I know. It's not like Twitter in that they can still see what you post.

Thanks, I saw the number on Steemit.com, but I always suspected it somehow isn't correct.
It's a pity I can't unfollow some followers I truly wouldn't want to follow my posts - the mere look at who that was made me shiver.
Thanks for help again.
