The 8th day of March, every year is The International Women's Day (IWD).
Formely known as The International Working Women's Day, it was first celebrated in New York, USA, in the year 1909 according to some group, by the Socialist Party of America in remembrance of the International Ladies Garment Workers' Union Strike that took. Place in 1908.
Another group linked its origin to the February Revolution which took place between March 8-12 1917 where textile factory women protested against the harsh working condition.
Over the years, the day has gained worldwide recognition with some countries declaring March 8 a public holiday for women only while some do not declare any holiday but still celebrate it.
The Yellow Mimosa is the official symbol of the day. It formerly was violets and lily-of-the-valley but was changed because they were difficult to find.
"Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives" is the theme of this year's edition of International Women's Day.
