March 8 is the World Women's Day. It is also a day of social media, as well as various on-line and off-line women's campaigns.
So how did March 8 become the World Women's Day? Should we celebrate this day as a festival? Should we celebrate with a heart of struggle?
- How did it start?
World Women's Day originated in the movement of women workers, and in 1975 the UN officially designated March 8 as 'Women's Day'.
In 1908, more than 150,000 American workers crossed New York streets. This was the beginning of a massive demonstration of women who were unfamiliar with history.
They cited shortening work time, raising wages, improving the working environment and winning women's right to vote. And a year later, the US Socialist Party announced the Women's Day.
The proposal to make Women's Day an International Day was at Clara J. Jetkin's International Conference on Women Workers in Copenhagen in 1910.
There were 100 women from 17 countries on the spot and unanimously voted for her proposal.
World Women's Day was first commemorated in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland in 1911. This is the 108th Women's Day this year.
The UN Women 's Organization has been announcing the theme of each year since 1996, this year' s theme is "Think equally, build smarter and innovate for change . According to statistics from the United Nations, only half of the world's working-age women are involved in labor.
World Women's Day celebrated and commemorated how many women fought in society, economy and politics in general. But looking at the origins of women's day can tell how desperately women struggled for equal rights on the streets at the time.
- Why is it March 8?
When Jetkine first proposed World Women's Day, no specific date was set.
In 1917, when the First World War was in full swing, Russian women workers staged massive strikes with "bread and peace".
Four days later, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia was abolished and women got suffrage from the Provisional Government.
March 8 is the day when the "Bread and Peace" demonstrations began.
- Is there a World Men's Day?
November 19 is the World Men's Day.
This day, which began in the 1990s, is not an official day designated by the United Nations but commemorates World Men's Day in about 60 countries, including the United Kingdom.
World Day for Men is the day of "focusing on the health of men and boys, improving relationships with women, seeking gender equality, and paying attention to positive male role models."
- Women's Day in the World
World Women's Day is designated as an official national anniversary. Russia is a typical case. In Russia, flower sales have doubled since the Women's Day.
In China, not all companies are involved, but there are also companies that give women workers a turnaround.
In the United States, March is designated as the month of women, and the President announces an annual celebration of women's achievements.
Since 1985, Korea has also commemorated the 'Women's Day Celebration of the World Women's Day'. It is the 35th anniversary of 2019 as a day of sharing the awareness of the problems of Korean society women.
