The teacher of wisdom Ben Sira ended his book by teaching that wisdom is not just a theoretical science, but that this wisdom developed in the history of Israel through the actions and the feats of its greatest characters; in other words, to understand the history of Israel is to understand the providence and the practical wisdom of God.
And among the great characters described by the teacher of wisdom Ben Sira was the prophet Elisha, a prophet who, through his miracles, constituted a prefiguration of Jesus.
Ben Sira made a brief summary of the life of the prophet Elisha, where he highlighted what he considered the most remarkable; in this way he began by remembering how Elisha received the spirit and the power of Elijah, when this prophet was caught up to heaven, to allow Elisha perform signs and wonders before the people:
"When Elijah was enveloped in the whirlwind,
ELISHA was filled with his spirit;
he worked twice as many marvels,
and every utterance of his mouth was wonderful" Ben Sira 48:12.
The teacher Ben Sira also mentioned that Elisha advised the kings of Judah and Israel to obtain great victories, and also that when he was persecuted by the Arameans he humiliated them and mocked them, the spiritual power of Elijah was so great that he became very feared by his enemies:
"During his lifetime he feared no one,
nor was anyone able to intimidate his will" Ben Sira 48:12
Finally, Ben Sira said of Elisha that he performed great signs, and that even after he died, his bones made a dead man rise again:
"Nothing was beyond his power;
and from where he lay buried, his body prophesied
In life he performed wonders,
and after death, marvelous deeds" Ben Sira 48:13-14.
Ben Sira did not describe anything more about Elisha, but added that the prophet had to face a generation that no longer had the fear of God and thus the prophet received the rejection of many, Elisha was only recognized as a prophet long after his death:
"Despite all this the people did not repent,
nor did they give up their sins,
until they were uprooted from their land
and scattered all over the earth" Ben Sira 48:15.
