Pie Crust Tea Table, Design Process

in woodworking •  7 years ago

Another table top I made a while back. Unfortunately, I did not take pictures of the build. It is koa veneer on baltic birch with hand carved cherry for the rim. I used steel wool in vinegar and garnet shellac for the antiqueing.

I posted these pics a few months back, but I have more new followers now who may not have seen it.

I am finally at the point where I can get around to completing the table legs, now that all the christmas gifts are done.

So here is the design process for the legs.

I want something with a sense of movement and life.

I started with some rough sketches and refined it from there.

Then I built a small model. Yes, each leg is different.

Here is the complete model with the top.

It will be a tilt top for easy storage or display. I will have to craft some sort of hinge and latch.

The next step is to cut the legs out of a plank of 5/4 walnut.

After that I will get on the lathe to turn the centerpost.

Looks good!👍

That pie crust edge carving is excellent and the antiquing is nice and subtle. I remember the design for the legs from your earlier post. I am looking forward to seeing how this piece turns out.

I wish I had your creativity, respect your work.
