19th August 2003 is the day when bombings at the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq killed 22 humanitarian workers along with Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq. In 2008, the United Nations designated this day as World Humanitarian Day (WHD) to commemorate and salute all humanitarian workers and those who provide aid, food, shelter, healthcare and protection to the needy. The theme for this year’s WHD campaign is, “It takes a village” which is a metaphor for the amount of help this world requires to provide aid to the needy. It is an indication for all of us to join hands for societal causes and remove all inequalities.
Among the many societal causes in need of attention, education is one of the most critical. Even though education is a basic fundamental right for all citizens, India still has 287 Million uneducated people. Keeping the socio-economic factor in mind, along with the rise in unemployment levels and poverty rates, Vidya Chetana, an NGO for education has been working towards this cause with its NGO volunteers to provide aid for the education of underprivileged and meritorious students.
