World Junior Hockey

What is more exciting than the World Juniors?

I watch approximately 150 NHL games a year. I watch my Calgary Flames 82 times. I watch a few Edmonton Oilers games. Definitely most of the playoffs.

But I get so much more excited for the World Juniors! As non-professionals who are trying to make a name for themselves, they are playing for their lives. I guess an easy comparison is the NCAA Final Four. But I don't watch basketball. I don't have time.

When each country has 20 of their best players who are all under 20 years old, it provides total excitement, skill, and emotion. The short tournament length of 10 days means lay it all out on the line.

I have gone to watch the tournament in Malmo, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland. It did not disappoint! Being surrounded by fellow Canadians with the same passion made it an unforgettable experience. Seeing the next big stars, scouts, GMs, previous NHLers was super exciting. I felt like a kid again.

Unfortunately the tournament is too big in Canada which makes it difficult to get tickets, or afford them. It does, however, give me great vacation ideas every few years over the Christmas and New Year's holidays. 2020 is in the Czech Republic... Hmmm

One of my favorite things about the holidays is getting to watch a lot of great hockey in the World Juniors tournament. Bit of a holiday staple now, really. Glad to see that there's a hockey community (and plenty of Canadians) on here.

I think the tournament is being jointly-hosted next year by Vancouver and Victoria (my city!). Super excited to see some games live next year!
