I promised a final review of the Rumble, and now that I've had a few days to think about it, as well as the ability to watch the fallout on Raw and Smackdown I can safely say, this wait was wasted. I feel the exact same about the Rumble now as I did before, and as a bonus, thought both Raw and Smackdown were big letdowns.
Keeping this short because my opinion are the same as I already hinted at. After I talk about the match I will say up for matches that were more positive than negative, and down for the opposite.
Raw tag title match. This one was odd, made Jordan look bad but made Rollins look good, and the right team won. Up.
Smackdown tag title match. Again, the right team won. The in ring work was alright, but not the best either of these teams are capable of. The match as a whole was a bit of a letdown, being too quick, and with the Usos having a sweep. Down.
Universal title match. Well, the right guy took the pin at least, plus there was some decent destruction. But anytime a part time champion walks away still champion? Down.
WWE title match. I really, really wanted Sami to win this for himself and Owens, I would have been okay with Owens winning it as long as it was clear Sami was the workhorse. But alas, A.J. Styles keeps his title. I mean, what could he possibly do with it to interest us? Up.
Men's Rumble. I still say there was a lot of wasted potential here, but Nakamura winning to set up a dream match at Wrestlemania between himself and A.J. Styles makes this a net positive. Up.
The first ever Women's Royal Rumble match.
This was pure waste, legends stealing spots from fresh talent then not even getting eliminated by the current stars in the match, Asuka seemingly barely winning, and Ronda Rousey coming out to steal the moment at the end, all served to make this at least as big a failure as when James Elsworth "won" the first ever women's MITB. Down.
More ups than downs, but the failure of the history making women's rumble brings a down to the whole ppv.
Royal Rumble 2018. Down.
