Short posts vs Shit posts 💩: A Random Rambling

in writing •  6 years ago

I've noticed that one of the main deterrents to posting several times per day is the drop in quality that some Steemians assume it will bring. I'm sure that it can cause worthless posts to be made but, well, size isn't everything. Some topics and types of writing are more suited to longer posts but it's not impossible to write something with meaning and impact that doesn't take up that many words.

When I write poetry, for instance, I mostly use it as a means to express an emotion. Sometimes what I want to express is profound, sometimes it's silly or even a little shallow. That's because it represents a part of me and there are many sides to me all of which have relevance. I wouldn't have very much fun with writing if I felt like every word I wrote needed to be amazingly impressive. But even in their brevity, the things I say have value (if only to me and the handful of other people who read them).

Basically, I would like for us to feel confident in saying what needs to be said or what we'd like to say, whether it takes 10 words or 10,000. Just make them authentic.

I agree @elementm. I've written short posts that have a lot behind them.

I would hate to see Steemit get all authoritarian with posts. This is a place for self expression.

I agree about self expression. I think that there's a bit of a bias towards longer article style posts. I don't mind larger rewards going out to authors of lengthier high quality content but there shouldn't be an assumption that shorter posts can't have worth too. Plus, I think it's been proven that the link between post quality and rewards isn't quite as strong as it should be anyway ¯_(ツ)_/¯ .

True. For me, if there's a reason for the post, if it's inspired, if it's inspiring, if I got something from it, if I enjoyed it, I upvote. Doesn't matter if it's three sentences. There can be a lot of all that in those three sentences. I feel like we're trying to abolish the scarcity mentality and also the idea of "work" here on the Steemit blockchain. Still some people believe people should have to work hard to earn Steem. Both old, tired concepts not in line with this ecosystem.

Indeed! There will come a time when we're paid just for our attention but until then, if three sentences or a funny doodle add value to my day, they're going to get an upvote from me.

Mirrors many of my thoughts regarding Steemit at the moment. I think short posts can be just as good, especially poems, if they are clean and express an idea or emotion to a tee. I'd rather read 10 words of gold, than 1000 of filler!

Thank you :) It's actually more difficult for me to share my deepest feelings in poetry than it would be to write lots and lots of words that never really say what I mean. It may be different for others but my writing style just tends to produce shorter pieces.

Sometimes true, but there are times when writing and sometimes a little
