As I got nearer to the house, I decided to venture into the bush around our house to see if I could see anything that might be convincing that my brother has not been kidnapped. As I stepped into the bush just behind the fence of the house, I noticed something strange lying on the grass.

It was a white handkerchief, at first it made no sense but after some thinking and flashbacks to movies of abduction that I've watched, I knew the hankie was not just lying around for fun. I ran inside and I noticed that the compound was now filled with neighbours trying to pacify my weeping mother. I also noticed that my dad was home now with his car and two police vehicles were packed just inside our compound. I ran to my dad to tell him about the hankie and he asked me to take him there. When we got there, he picked it up and as he unfolded it, I noticed some kind of white particles falling from it.
"Jerome!"
My dad called out to one of his men. "Oga!"
Mr Jerome who was wearing a black police vest answered.
"Get the other men here let's comb the bush right now" my dad ordered.
"Yes sir!"
Almost like the speed of lightning, Jerome had rushed into the compound and assembled all the policemen just as my dad ordered.
"Dad, I'll go with you"
I said. My dad glanced at me. From the expression on his face, I could read the statement: 'ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?'
He then instructed one of his men to stay back and watch over our house. I stood at the entrance of the bush saying some prayers to God. Truly, Mimi is a very troublesome type but I cannot bear losing him to some barbaric men of the underworld. * * *
After two hours of frantic search, my dad and his men returned, they found no trail that could be of help to the case.
"Jerome, have you called the patrol team?"
My dad asked his subordinate with a sad face.
"Yes sir, no progress from them yet." He replied.
"What about the check-points?" dad asked again.
"Safa told me they searched every vehicle on the highway but nothing suspicious had been found" Jerome replied.
I could see frustration all over dad's face, his light-skinned face had turned pale and there was weariness written all over him. I wonder why women always have the biggest share of sorrow as I compared him to my mom whose face had swollen for all the tears she had given out. Just then, my dad's phone gave out a normal tempo of ringing and as he tucked his hand into his black trouser to reach for it, numerous thoughts ran through my mind:
"I hope it's the kidnappers, No, what if they were just ritualist? Or could someone be calling to inform him that Mimi has been found, Could it be just his colleagues from other precincts across the state, wait, what if someone is calling to have seen my brother's decapitated body in the woods or somewhere?"
My heart skipped a beat after the last of my thoughts and began to beat harder and faster as I was waiting for him to pick the call.
"This is a hidden number" He said to his subordinate.
"OK sir, delay the call a bit so I can call the communication department to tap into your conversation."
Jerom replied as he unhooked his walkie-talkie from where it has been hanging on a part of his police belt. He made some statement which I knew was a code into it and then informed the communication department in my dad's precinct.
"You can answer the call now sir"
Jerome said as he clings his walkie-talkie back to its former position.
Without no further delay, dad picked the call and had it on loudspeaker.
"Hello, who's speaking?" he Inquired.
"DPO, you still want your son?"
A distorted voice asked coldly from the call.
"Oh yes, what do you want, please I'll give anything"
My dad pleaded.
"Man, I don't need your money, I need something else"
The distorted voice said again this time with a short-lived cackle.
I felt very displeased, a sudden cloud of hate and disgust overshadowed me and I felt like handling the phone all by myself.
"What do you want, please?"
My dad said trying his possible best to sound unshaken.
As I maintained my silence and listened along with the other men, I noticed Jerome as he moved away from the spot to use his walkie-talkie.
I had no idea what message he was sending but I was sure it was something that has to do with the kidnap.
After some minutes of conversation, the caller ended the call with my dad and I need not ask Google before recognizing the discomforting look on his face. He really was troubled.
