Finally discover the six must-have features of quality content.
"I still don't understand what quality content is."
That's a comment I saw on a Steemit post in the past week. The person who said it has been around for at least two months and has been active both writing and commenting. I found it a bit distressing because it shouldn't take that long to figure out what it is. But the trouble is, when you ask what it is, it's hard to find a simple answer. It seems like the famous saying, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it."
There's more to it than just writing well without typos or poor grammar (you should always do that). But what else should a quality post include?
It's a problem beyond Steemit. Anyone who publishes content on the web faces the same question. So I went on a mission to define it for bloggers, especially those on this platform.
Who's the judge?
Who is it that decides what quality content is, and what it isn't? That's the first question I needed to answer. And guess what I found? Almost every resource or authority site on developing good content referred to Google. I'm talking about big names like Forbes, Content Marketing Institute, Hubspot, Kissmetrics and LifeHack.org. Of course, each of them had their own spin on the topic.
But it seems that what makes Google happy, will also make readers happy. At least that is Google's goal, and the reason they have such an impact on what people consider to be quality content.
What I did next was comb through a bunch of the articles looking for commonalities. I pulled out the following list of attributes everyone seemed to agree makes quality content.
It must be original
Original is defined as:
Created personally by a particular artist, writer, musician, etc.; not a copy.
Whatever content you create needs to meet this definition. You need to create it. That doesn't mean you can't be inspired by someone, or even use them as a reference (properly sourced of course). But the content you post needs to have originated from your own mind, in your own words, images, music or video. It's just that simple.
Be informative
The best content serves a purpose. It answers a question, solves a problem, inspires, or entertains. You want to add value to the community or the subject you're writing about (or creating videos for).
People want to hear what you have to say, but say it in a focused way. Rambling about your grocery list probably isn't something that adds value - unless it's a humorous story that will entertain. The point is that posts don't need to be research papers to offer value, but they do need to have a purpose.
Make it "long enough"
How long is long enough is a question everyone asks. There is no absolute answer in terms of the number of words or video length. The content should be long enough to make your point while keeping the reader/viewer engaged.
The trouble is that it will vary by topic, the purpose of the post, the audience, the expertise of the author and even change over time. But while there are no firm numbers to go by, you can gauge what it should be by doing a little research on other posts on your topic.
The one thing that is universally agreed is you should never "fluff" your content to make it longer just for the sake of making it longer (to meet some arbitrary word count for example).
Always cite your sources
If you make reference to any outside sources, you need to link to them or give them appropriate credit. Citing your sources actually gives you more credibility.
How you do that is up to you. For example, you can use an in text reference such as "Dr. Acme, in an interview with the ABC newspaper..." This tells the reader immediately who and what your source is. Also, including a link to the source is good practice.
Alternatively, some people include links at the end of their posts or videos which is also acceptable.
Of course, if you're posting a complete work of fiction, poetry or personal experience, then sourcing isn't necessary unless you rely on a source somewhere in your content.
Include some visual content
According to Forbes, "visual content outperforms text-only content in terms of attracting inbound links, social media shares, time spent on page, and engagement."
Using images or video in your content almost always makes it more enjoyable for the reader which leads to a higher perceived quality. A massive block of text can be quite intimidating, even if it is formatted well for the web.
And if you use video, also remember to include some text. Describe your video, give it a proper introduction, or include other relevant facts. When you do so, you'll make everyone (or as close to everyone as you can) happy because some people won't watch videos - or they can't at that moment.
Format it for the web
Reading on electronic devices is hard on the eyes. So have some sympathy for your readers and use short paragraphs of 3-5 sentences. Include a line break between paragraphs (hit enter between them). Break up your post into sections using subheadings that describe the content as well as support skimming.
Also, remember many people are reading on mobile devices where even short paragraphs can appear long on small screens. Stick to just a few sentences though, and your post should be easy enough to read on any screen.
Is that it?
There's plenty of room for argument about other attributes quality content should have. The six I chose are the core ones I think you should strive for in every post.
What do you think? Did I pick the right ones? How do you define quality content?

Being a talented writer is not something we get used to be. It has to be practiced everytime to enhance this talent. Michael Jordan didn't start to be most valuable player but rather he step on the ladder of success. He put his sweat, blood, nightless sleep, hunger to sacrifice for his success. Hard work really pays off in the end. Other people call it overnight success but we didnt see the picture behind of this overnight success, it is composed of all sacrifices. Thanks for this valuable post as always @hyperfundit

@hyperfundit @ntowl
Well this is of the most difficult questions to answer.
Some posts may be rubbish for one person, but a gold mine for another!
I do think that using images, text formatting, chapters and so on will be regardless of the content of the article a big plus for the post.
But according to me the quality should be searched within the content. I do admit that not all my posts are quality post, while I do normally use formatting and images!
I do write about three niches namely Steem related, Crypto related and sports (betting) related. So my group of followers is a quite deverse group!
If I do write about Steem, regardless of the quality, I will have a bigger chance that it will interest people!
If I do write about crypto related stuff, probably some followers who are interested in the sports part will skip the post!
If I do write about sports betting, it does get really interesting! The one who do follow me for the steem content and crypto content, will, regardless of the quality of the post, consider is useless post! While the sports betting community could find it a real hidden gem!
So quality content could not be judged by the number upvotes of styling of the post. Quality cannot be measured by the number of comments neither! Strange isn't it! To give you an example I am running a world cup contest and the registration post has now more than 330 comments attached to it, the post did got resteemed 5 or 6 times! Does this make it a great post full of quality? No! But it does offer a window to write quality articles about it :)
According to me the quality of a post is a personal thingy and for sure is niche related!
I do think however that the author could get an idea of the quality of the post by receiving meaningful and genuine comments !about the content of the post!
But hey, that's my vision about quality of postings!
Now I will let the community decide if this was a quality comment and just like written above the community will decide on the quality and I will get an idea by the number of replies of this comment!
Thanks for giving me a platform to express myself!
Cheers,
Peter

I have personally been in the writing and publishing industry for over 30 years. I have worked with writers, taught and coached writers, and befriended writers. This cross-section of comments is quite typical for what I have heard for years. Some crying about the unfairness of it all. "Oh she can afford to hire a publicist." "Oh he knew someone in NYC and got a contract." "I just can't write." And on and on and on. While those who get where they are going just keep plodding on one step at a time, willing to be a part of whatever system is operating at the time. (Within reason of course.)
Never can I remember not paying out a LOT of money to promote my books (my writing). I still do. And now I'm doing it on Steemit. And I don't mind because I feel I have something to say. And I feel what I have to say will help someone along the way. And I think buying bots is just a great way of doing that.
I've poured my life's blood out in social media for years. Spent a fortune on Facebook ads, etc. Never went anywhere. But on Steemit, it's totally different.
I love Steemit and am SO thankful to have found it.

And on another note -- stories are everywhere of the "editor" who turned down a book that later became a bestseller. That author didn't sit and cry. Or it never would have become a bestseller. That author realized that was just one person's opinion and moved forward. Same thing here. If this is where you have chosen to park and stay for a while. Practice writing. Write. Post. And keep plodding on. And enjoy the ride!

I have to sound spammy by saying I agree because you have said what I wanted to say. I am in the same line of thought. I have been in some paying blogging sites and I always do what I have always done. Just write for the sake of sharing. When I keep thinking on how to make it big or earn more, I lose focus and motivation. Topics we write does not reach all people. It would be great if it did though.

Norma Jean, I’m following you and hope to learn about bots with you. I’m not a writer, I even find difficult to call myself a blogger. I just write randomly, because I like to write (English is not my mother tongue). I’m a photographer that likes to write, sometimes, that’s all. I felt myself identified with you when you say you spent fortunes on the other social networks for nothing. I won’t put a dime on them ever again, that’s for sure. About Steemit, I love it too, and I dream about having more time to dedicate myself and learn more about it. Until there, I’m just concerned about building a good reputation, above all. Cheers and thanks for your comment, have a wonderful weekend!

How can Steemit be an arbiter of good content when votes can be bought or manipulated with Bots?
This isn't sour grapes because my posts don't do well.Perhaps they don't deserve to. But that's the point. How can you seriously tell how good your content is when the judging system is skewed?

Of course it is worth to share, and people who want to read it will. You have to see it ( I think) as a book, you have 1000 books 800 walk passed it, 120 will have a look and 80 people may buy it. :-) Then even the ct or 2 ct you make is actually a lot. :-) The bots are just the possibility to get more faster, when the amount of vote is higher, people even talk different to you, and they will all follow. The bots are like a promotional good. It makes the chance that your book gets sold higher :-) Or do I think wrong?
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

No you are right. The bots are just the latest version of advertisement. Whoever has resources can make a bet to get more attention. This is how businesses also makes money in return. Man and Bot work side by side to create a better world with more quality content. This is a process that constantly is going on that has brought us from Stone Age to High-end Smartphones.

I understand your comparison of voting bots with advertising and promoting. But as I understand from the criticism on here, Bots are used to promote the contributors own content, thus boosting their reward artificially.
Advertising a traditional product or service costs money, which is lost if the buying public vote with their purse.

Thank you. I understand the point you make.Although I'm old I do like to keep up with technology.
I used Bots in betting on Horse Racing. Placing bets on fast moving prices in running, i.e. whilst the race is in progress, for which a Bot is essential.
But for voting I think it is too open to abuse,as seems to be evident from the weight of adverse comments.

Thank you. I think there maybe a misunderstanding of the role of Robots and their purpose. If a bot is used to advertise a post- to widen it's circulation and have more people see it and vote on the quality of the content, then that is in the spirit of the original intention of Steemit in my view.
But as I understand, bots can be used by a publisher to add votes to their own posts,or by one person opening multiple accounts and programming bots from those accounts to vote where directed.Vote rigging without consideration of content quality.
Betting bots, are used where prices move so fast whilst a race is being run,and is one bettors opinion about a horse's chances, against another person with an opposing view. The bettor sets the price parameters at which the bot will place the bet and close it,either to take profit or to stop loss beyond that programmed. The win or loss is between two individuals. The betting community at large do not lose out.

thank you for the explanation. And I think the knfe cuts both ways with the bot use. you have got a chance to be read more, and to be voted for. Personally, I do read what friends resteem, but I do not read what bots resteem. I do understand what you mean, but then I think you have to do it totally different. Like 1 price for promoting, not who promotes with the highest amount is seen first. That way we can push our message up all the same way, may be on different timings, and the chance of being resteemed naturally and promoted again. Now I sometimes see a high rep person placing something silly and getting like 30 and sometimes much more for it. Just by a few and his own name. May be this would be a nice blog to write ? What when you make Steemit your way? :-)
Self voting would be forbidden. (I do it now! because I can :-) )
Promotion would be for all the same and you could do it daily
resteem only by your followers
to advertise you may only once a day per person! and not per blog.
Now the smal ones stay small so much longer, because upvotes cost to much sp especially when you have not got a slider ( @busy has!)
I think the whole upset should be different to work honestly. The bots are there to get somewhere and maybe even get read more just because you look bigger by getting a bigger reward. Them people who are sweet to you call you sir and mam and please read my blog, you see them so much more often at bigger reputation people OR at posts that has a lot of reward.
Now I am sorry to make this so long, I am a massage therapist and have not any knowledge about setting up all this pc stuff, I just have an idea how it could be better and fairer. But maybe I am totally wrong. :-)

Thank you. I think your ideas and thoughts are on the right lines.I read that reforms are on the way, including one person one vote being considered.

Although your post is very well written, and I appreciate that, meaning, the well written part, you're still trying to define something that is an abstraction; mind you, I do not begrudge your efforts, in fact, I appreciate them.
But still, and all your points are well taken, trying to define what constitutes good content is almost like a man trying to explain why this starlet with the big boobs, as opposed to that English one with the flawless diction and the green eyes, is 'more beautiful.' I guess what I'm trying to state is that, it's probably something very subjective.
Let me, for example, take a very personal approach to illustrate: I consider myself a pretty fair writer. Yet, and I have only been here for about two weeks, despite several attempts at getting some traction in the form of recognition for 6 or 8 posts, that are, subjectively, of course, very well written by me, all I have gotten is two comments, along with people who seem to "follow" me even before I have clicked the Post button!
Two comments only; of those, one was from some expert on grammar telling me about a minor mistake in one of the posts; the second one was from an individual who does not seem to be in touch with reality, yet he has an account here, plus a keyboard, informing me or, accusing me or the world, that someone had stolen from a non-profit cause that he seem to favor - unfortunately, I know nothing about the cause, and quite fortunately, I know nothing about him or his mental condition!
Thus, as I mentioned above, my own subjective opinion, or perception of, my own shares here blows; no one notices, no one cares, no one recognizes good content; or, if it's atrocious, meaning my own shtick, no one take the time to mention it.
Now, watch, true to my understanding of how things work here on
steemit, this whole post is now about to go to sleep into a deep black void of silence; let's don't forget apathy, as well.
Anyway, thanks for your share!

Life is competition. You need to create content daily. You also need to come up with interesting ways to capture peoples attention. The best strategies are usually fast and plenty or little but massive in quality so it stands out immediately. I talk about thousands of hours or practice to become really talented at a craft. This is the sacrifice that it takes.

This is not right? Sounds like entitlement. The market will reward what people want. People want a specific kind of content. This means the artist has to not only consider what he likes to do but also what the market wants.
It's about building up an audience and create a cool personal brand that people like and then you can start to sell something and do something cool. This is an art-form. Talent is overrated it's about how hard you work these days.

I found pain and suffering a good way to get your writing life in order. Because all great art is based on suffering the artists had to go through.
For example: I wrote a horror book based on my experience in Miami. It was great detox for me. Sadly, it may not be for the reader.

Hi. Thanks for the details above. I must agree it is one of the most simple and informative article I have read in a while. Many of the things we usually know but tend to forget and do not apply it while writing. It looks so easy to sue as a checklist for each article we may write.
Thumbs Up!

Thanks @hyperfundit, but quality content doesn't seem to matter much. For example, I just published an article on decentralized governance, Dan Larimer's primary concern, the problem he's dedicated his life to solving. It appears to meet all your criteria, but after 4 days it's received 4 votes.
Here it is, please tell me where I'm going wrong... https://steemit.com/eos/@wayviator/decentralized-governance-of-by-and-for-the-people.

To write a quality content is not an easy job
Nothing wastes a writer’s time more than sitting down to write and not knowing what you want to say. If a deadline is looming, you’re just stuck in that chair until inspiration strikes. This is a major time-waster. That pressure to deliver a great post idea — right now — also inhibits creativity for many writers.
Quality content really deserves some accolades

We can not use something to be like a good talent writer. It will be practiced every year to improve this talent. Michael Jordan did not begin to be the most valuable player, but he went ahead in the scale of success. He gave his sweat, blood, sleep no night, and hunger for sacrifice for his success. Hard work really pays off eventually. Other people talk about success overnight but we did not see the image behind this night's success, it is made up of all dedicated objects. Thanks for this valuable post always @hyperfundit.

As an imaginative thinker, the inspiration comes to me at the odd times. To me they are very beautiful thing, which can be a very good content but the courage to believe that this is coming from my own personal thoughts isn't just there. I write, and then tear it off. I wish I had the self-esteem to believe I could be and give the best. Somehow, am working on myself.

Excellent! I am a newbie and working on improving content and formatting. I am one of those people where if a blog is too long or does not have a good flow with breaks, I have a tough time staying focused. I am a short, sweet and to the point type of person. Hopefully this personality trait will serve me well as I write blogs.

I agree and find your article very useful. It’s the first time I read about this, for me, quality content was a concept I just had subjectively intuited, never questioned myself about it. For me is anything you create that engage people, and has a “mark” of your own (like a Van Gogh painting when you see it. You know it’s his work!) But it was great to see how you “decompose” it and write about it in an objective way. It makes all the sense and I can’t figure out anything more to add.
I always have an issue about the typos. I write a bit by heart, and always re-read them, but sometimes I don’t notice them until after seeing the posts published, sometimes only a day or two after... if not only after the payout... (it happened just a while ago with a post I published yesterday, and the typo was in the title 😩!)
And, as English is not my mother tongue, it gets sometimes harder to see the typos immediately. And also gets harder to get people understand what I really want to say, sometimes
That why I am a photographer 🤗. Photos speak by themselves ♥️.
Thanks for this. I really appreciated and am resteeming it!
Cheers and have a wonderful weekend!

I've always had the trouble that some of my content is often 'too long'. It's weird.
Its to the point that I've taken long content and cut it up into more 'steem-sized' portions that seem to do a bit better on the platform.
Its a little disconcerting that many Steemers do not like to engage with longer-form content compared to quick skims or memes.
Thanks for sharing your advice.

Do you not think that "Quality Content" Is a coined phrase (No pun intended)
Also from inception to realization. Content takes life and time to create.
At which point that content. Can soon disappear from sight, on such a narrow band of option within the steemit home page, Don't you think?
You say that google, is the resource for the definition/example, to afford quality content?
But are we not on steemit? Where does Googles jurisdiction, end? Surely like Social media sites.
Steemit content is by far, hidden from Googles heavy eye and gaze?
MAKE CONTENT LONG ENOUGH?
Would it not be better. To create an article compelling. Whether, bite size or otherwise. That article will entice, while offering many bite sized chucks to your new found audience?
Ps great article, I voted up and would love to hear your thoughts

I can relate this article @hyperfundit! When I joined this community last February of this year or I am just a three months old in the platform. At first, I was curious and helpless what is in Steemit. Most especially on how to write an article with a substance. Or what do I post to be an interest to the community, etc. But as months passed by, I have learned a lot. Though, I am not good into writing, but I am motivated and encourage to improve it better and learn from the expert in the community. Honing a skills takes a lot of time and there is no express lane on the matter either. Though having a good quality content in the blogs does not guarantee for an upvotes, importantly there are still some who believes and appreciates the effort. Thanks a lot for sharing this subject matter! Great article!

In the words, if the steering takes place, the driver of the car can not be. Similarly, if you have a hand pane, then the author can not be. To be a good writer, you need quality writing. The essence of the writing and the meaning of having meaning must be important.

"make it long enough" 80% of the people read no more than headlines,or titles. That's a fact. Therefore a long article must be super entertaining or informative and just a very few writers have the skills to come up with posts like that daily. And that's a problem on Steemit, because for the majority it means they will never make money on the platform and leave. We need to change that if we want @steemit to succeed in a long run.

I want to say that I checked in all of those points pointed above but then who am I to say so? Sometimes quality is subjective and depends on what others would judge as quality and as you have said based on the subject and topic just like memes. How can we even judge quality in that? :D

I agree with those 6 important factors in making a good quality post. I also would like to suggest that maybe those who do not speak English or if English is not the mother tongue to us the internet like Grammarly or other apps to help improve the spelling and grammar in their posts. It is not my mother tongue too but I love to read and watch movies so it helps. I know there are the bots but hay I use it too sometimes. We would like our posts to get noticed. But maybe in the long run things will improve. I always try to tell my group members to check their posts and to make longer ones but with good content. Resteemed so my group and others can also learn about this and get ideas, followed too. Thank you for this!

As for the long enough part, I actually tend to think the opposite. Making content concise enough is a skill that many people have to eventually learn, particularly natural writers who may have a tendency to go on and on. At a certain point you have to learn to tighten things up.

I agree with this. ALSO, I believe that the title of one's content goes a long way in determining whether or not the interest of the targeted readers are caught; for example: I wouldn't bother reading this post if the title was uninteresting to me. Finally, I have the opinion that basic knowledge of SEO should come in quite handy for someone writing for the internet.
