"Dirt Road, highway to heaven"

The country lane, a dirt road to heaven.
As a child I walked, and my dreams beckoned.

Cool, damp; the air buzzing with yellow flies,
A walk was a way to clear the minds eye.

On one side, the deeper woods. The other,
A fence row of trees, the sun is smothered.

Flint chips, pottery shards and arrow heads,
Relics of history, times that have fled.

Dog, cat, rooster and pet pig behind me,
A parade that was wonderful to see.

Memories of life in a simpler time,
Bring me solace, so that my spirit shines.

The country lane, the heat, the insects whine,
Incredible heritage, pride instilled.

[a note about "the Parade", this really did happen
It was my mothers habit, to go out just at
Sundown, when it wasn't so hot, and walk up and down
The dirt road in front of our house. Ostensibly,
She was looking for nails, which when found she would
Toss them off into the woods.
But she often found flint chips and broken Pottery, and
Even arrowheads from time to time.
And at one point, we did have a rooster, and a pet 'runt'
Pig, in addition to the usual dog and cat.
All these critters would follow Mama, in a line behind her.
People passing by would actually slow down to look and laugh at the spectacle
